Germany's Central Research Network for Extraordinary Celestial Phenomena (CENAP) reports clearing up some 14,000 UFO cases, with director Hansjürgen Köhler describing the group as the busiest reporting centre in the German-speaking world. The organization, based in Lützelbach, receives between three and six reports daily, dedicating significant resources to investigating what people observe in the sky. This extensive focus on identifying and explaining aerial phenomena highlights a national capacity for detailed investigation, even as fundamental questions about terrestrial security and national identity remain prominent.
CENAP serves as a point of contact for people in Germany seeking a scientific explanation for their sightings. Köhler stated that the work began with "youthful recklessness" in 1973, 53 years ago, when he and others started looking more closely at the UFO subject after calls kept coming into an observatory. They obtained microfilms from the United States from the Second World War era, showing flying objects considered inexplicable phenomena. Köhler noted that even back then, during the war, there were repeated natural phenomena, with some images being "quite striking" due to pilots' astonished reactions.
The recent release of so-called UFO files by the Pentagon has put the topic back in the spotlight, according to Köhler. The Pentagon formally confirmed the authenticity of three recordings from 2004 and 2015 in April 2020, about 6 years and 4 months ago, after the U.S. Navy had already released videos showing unidentified flying objects, now mostly referred to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). In December 2022, about 3 years and 8 months ago, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was set up within the U.S. Department of Defense to investigate UAP reports, assess potential threats to national security, and review past cases.
The Pursuit of Aerial Clarity
One of the confirmed recordings, the Gimbal video, was made in January 2015, about 11 years and 7 months ago, during a training flight by a U.S. Navy F/A-18 off the coast of California. Infrared footage shows an unidentified object appearing to rotate on its own axis, commented on in astonishment by the pilots. While the Pentagon confirmed the recording's authenticity, it has not been able to clearly establish the object’s exact identity. Köhler, however, is convinced the video shows nothing more than a balloon, explaining its apparently rapid movement as a relative motion between the aircraft and the balloon. He also noted that the F/A-18 has had issues with its electronic tracking systems since its introduction by the U.S. Navy, receiving nine updates to control misreadings, including in speed indications.
Köhler observed that social media and X amplify "tall tales," often causing debunking efforts to disappear. He expressed skepticism about daily visits from extraterrestrial beings, stating, "Supposedly, visitors from far out there drop by every day to see what we're up to here. I do not deny that there is life out there. But are we really to believe that they travel across galaxies with highly advanced technology to our blue planet and then crash of all places here above the desert?" This highlights the importance of scientific rigour against speculative narratives.
People can use free astronomy apps to identify what they are seeing in the sky, Köhler advised. He listed aircraft, helicopters, rocket stages, satellites, meteors, bright fireballs, planets, bright stars, balloons of all kinds, decorative foil balloons from children’s birthday parties and weddings, and lasers used by event organizers that sometimes shine over distances of several kilometers as common identifications. Some cases remain unexplained, he noted, due to missing key information, with researchers requiring the date, time, place, direction in the sky, and visual material for a serious investigation.

The extensive resources and scientific rigour applied to identifying "unidentified anomalous phenomena" in the skies above Germany, as demonstrated by CENAP's 14,000 cleared cases, underscore a national capacity for detailed investigation and resolution. This commitment to clarity in the aerial domain, including the assessment of "potential threats to national security" by the U.S. Department of Defense's AARO, highlights a specific national focus.
