AI System Deployed by Israeli Health Service Clalit

Clalit Health Services, a prominent healthcare provider, has officially put into operation an advanced artificial intelligence system. This system, known as AI–PRO, is built upon the foundational C–Pi platform. Its core objective is to provide substantial assistance to family doctors, empowering them to deliver medical care that is both proactive in its approach and highly personalized to individual patient needs.

System Functionality

Operating on a nightly cycle, the AI–PRO system diligently scans vast amounts of medical information. This data is meticulously extracted from comprehensive computerized patient records. Following this data acquisition, the system undertakes a crucial process of cross-referencing this information. It compares the scanned data against established clinical guidelines and draws upon extensive medical knowledge bases. The outcome of this analytical process is the generation and presentation of specific recommendations, alongside the identification of patients who are deemed to be at various levels of medical risk, all of which are then surfaced directly to the attending physician.

Several illustrative examples highlight the practical applications of the AI–PRO system. For instance, it can detect a patient diagnosed with diabetes who has, for various reasons, not undergone essential medical tests that are part of their care protocol. Another scenario involves identifying a female patient who is experiencing unbalanced hypertension, a condition requiring immediate clinical review. Beyond individual conditions, the system also identifies broader categories of patients, such as those who are at an elevated risk of developing osteoporosis. Furthermore, a critical function of the system is to flag specific medication combinations that, due to potential interactions or other concerns, necessitate careful attention and evaluation by the medical professional.

Doctor's Discretion

Crucially, the ultimate authority and responsibility for medical decisions continue to reside entirely with the human doctor. The AI–PRO system serves as an intelligent assistant, primarily by raising a 'flag' or presenting a well-researched recommendation. Upon receiving this input, the doctor then exercises their professional judgment to determine the most appropriate course of action. This range of actions includes the option to directly contact the patient to discuss the findings, to implement a change in the patient's current treatment regimen, to dispatch the patient for further diagnostic tests, or, after careful consideration, to make the professional decision to disregard the system's recommendation if deemed medically appropriate. This implementation by Clalit Health Services represents an advancement in the application of artificial intelligence within primary care settings, aiming to enhance the efficiency and personalization of medical services.
