Al Pacino plays a director who creates a computer-generated actor, a synthespian, who doesn't complain, doesn't need hair and makeup, and takes direction perfectly. She becomes the biggest star in the world—a vision of technology replacing human labor and human worth. Spike Jonze's 2013 film "Her" explores a different kind of loss: a lonely man falls for his operating system, Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Her human-like qualities and mandatory devotion to her operator approximate a fantasy of relationship that requires no reciprocity, no equality, no genuine human connection.
Alex Garland's "Ex Machina," released 11 years ago, examines consciousness in both human and artificial form, alongside the ego of the creator. Oscar Isaac plays a reclusive tech titan who fancies himself a god. An employee is invited to determine whether the AI Ava has achieved true human consciousness—a question that mirrors our current moment, where tech billionaires play god with systems affecting billions of lives. The film was called a class above its 2015 contemporaries and one of the stickier, more prescient future castings.
Not all cinema visions are dystopian. Christopher Nolan's 2014 "Interstellar" features TARS, a robot built with function in mind, not replacement. TARS complements and helps humans rather than replacing them—something scientists praised as realistic. It pilots ships, collects data, and even saves lives without the uncontrolled sentience that haunts other films. TARS has humor, programmed to a specific percentage, suggesting that alignment between human values and machine function is possible.
Ridley Scott's 1982 "Blade Runner" imagined a 2019 with smart homes and video calling, flying cars and analog photographs. But it's the AI replicants—"virtually identical to a human"—that still unsettle viewers. Daryl Hannah's and Rutger Hauer's punk, rogue androids were especially memorable, their humanity indistinguishable from our own, raising the question: What rights do we owe to beings we've created?
