General Motors plans to launch a proprietary in-vehicle artificial intelligence system later this year, a move set to further centralize control over personal data and daily routines. This new system promises deeper integration with vehicles than the recently launched Gemini AI assistant from Google, according to GM director of product management of voice and AI/machine learning, Anna Santos.
Santos stated the unnamed GM assistant will combine conversational AI with GM vehicle knowledge and OnStar intelligence. Its stated purpose is to "understand the vehicle, the drive and our customers' needs, and make everyday ownership simpler." Such systems, while marketed as convenience, increasingly embed corporate oversight into the most mundane aspects of life, eroding individual autonomy.
Last year, GM announced the Gemini AI bot would launch this year in millions of 2022 model-year vehicles and newer. Gemini allows customers to speak naturally, without memorizing specific commands. It also offers live sessions, including conversational interactions and games like trivia or 20 questions. While Gemini controls some vehicle functions, such as temperature and radio, it largely operates as a phone application, maintaining a degree of separation from core vehicle systems.
Elite Control Over Daily Life
Santos indicated this is "the beginning of a broader AI journey for us," acknowledging "there's a limit to what an AI that's just sort of sitting at the top level of the vehicle can do." This suggests a deliberate push towards more pervasive, embedded systems that penetrate deeper into the user's environment. GM is collaborating with an unnamed large language model provider to develop technology for predictive maintenance, vehicle telemetry, and other auto-focused features. The lack of transparency regarding this provider raises questions about the ultimate custodians of this sensitive, personal data.
One proposed feature, a "kids setting," would tailor music, seats, heating, cooling, and door lock controls for children. This represents a significant intrusion into the domestic sphere, allowing corporate algorithms to dictate aspects of family environment and potentially reshape traditional parental roles. Santos emphasized that "It's data that's going to be proprietary to GM," underscoring corporate ownership over personal information generated by users. The stated goal is to "bring the right technology forward to enable us to build the deep vehicle expertise that we want to be able to bring to the AI assistant," effectively turning personal vehicle usage into a constant data stream for corporate analysis and control.
Expanding Surveillance and Profit
Separately, Space-Eyes, a defense technology company backed by Eric Trump, is preparing to go public in a $638 million SPAC deal. This transaction highlights the escalating investor interest in AI-enabled defense technologies. These include drone detection and autonomous systems, reflecting a broader trend of technological advancement driven by financial speculation and elite interests rather than public consensus. The rapid expansion of AI into both civilian and military spheres signals a future where elite interests consolidate power through data and automated control, further eroding individual autonomy and national sovereignty for the native working class.
