Sehrawat's Comeback Delivers India Wrestling Gold

Aman Sehrawat won the men’s 57-kilogram freestyle wrestling gold at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Oct. 3, beating DPR Korea’s World Champion Han Chong Song 11-7 in the final. Sehrawat trailed 6-7 before scoring with a four-point move, then adding another point after Han’s challenge failed. With less than a minute left, Sehrawat pinned and turned Han to secure the win.

The Match Turns

The wrestlers stayed level early. Sehrawat defended against Han’s repeated attacks, then moved 6-1 ahead just after halftime. Han responded with a counterattack, scoring six points in quick succession to take a 7-6 lead. Sehrawat was behind, but his late scoring sequence secured the gold.

Injury delays interrupted the bout. After one delay, Sehrawat quickly built his 6-1 advantage. A later break for Han came before the North Korean wrestler regained momentum and moved ahead, according to the match account. The score shifted from Sehrawat’s 6-1 lead to Han’s 7-6 advantage before the final exchange settled the contest at 11-7.

A Gold After the Setback

Sehrawat’s decisive sequence included a four-point move while he trailed. He then picked up another point after Han’s challenge failed. With less than a minute remaining, he pinned and turned Han to regain the lead, holding on through the end of the final. Han entered the bout as World Champion, and Sehrawat’s win gave him the 57-kilogram title.

The gold marked Sehrawat’s second Asian Games medal. He won bronze in the same category at Hangzhou 2022, four years before the 2026 victory. This time, he moved from bronze to gold in the same weight category at the Games.

India’s Freestyle Results

Sehrawat’s victory gave India its second freestyle wrestling gold at these Games. Sujeet Kalkal won the 65-kilogram gold on Friday. The two wins came in different weight categories: Sehrawat beat Han in the 57-kilogram final, while Kalkal took the 65-kilogram title.

The final began with a period of level wrestling. Sehrawat defended against repeated attacks, took a 6-1 lead just after halftime, and then watched Han answer with a six-point counterattack. Injury delays interrupted the bout before each wrestler found momentum. Sehrawat finished with the four-point move, the point after Han’s unsuccessful challenge, and a late pin and turn to claim the 11-7 win. The result added a second Asian Games medal to his record and gave India its second freestyle gold at the competition.
