
Anthropic on Thursday announced a new interface meant to make it simpler for AI agents to operate and communicate with machinery, another step in the company’s push deeper into the physical world. The Model Hardware Standard, or MHS, is designed to work with any device that has a programmable interface, including equipment used in scientific research and advanced manufacturing. That means the people who build and run the machines are being asked to adapt to a new standard set by a private AI company.
Who Gets to Set the Standard
Elizabeth Kelly, head of beneficial deployments at Anthropic, said in an interview with CNBC, "We built this for science to sort of show the promise of AI, but there's also huge benefits here for enterprise and for industry." That’s the pitch: a tool framed as useful for science, then widened to enterprise and industry, where the real money and control sit. Anthropic said MHS aims to help companies reduce the amount of time it takes to set up and integrate their hardware. It’s also model agnostic, which means users are not beholden to Anthropic’s family of Claude models.
The company compared it to a USB-C cord, a tidy little metaphor for standardization. But standardization also means power. When one company helps define how machines talk to software, it doesn’t just simplify work. It shapes who gets to plug in, who gets locked out, and who has to follow the rules.
The Hardware Race Below the Surface
The announcement signals that Anthropic is wading deeper into hardware, where rivals including OpenAI and Amazon have spent billions of dollars designing AI-native devices and manufacturing tools. Anthropic is building out a silicon team to design custom chips for its models and recently hired Caitlin Kalinowski, a hardware executive who previously worked at OpenAI, Meta and Apple, according to LinkedIn. The competition here isn’t about serving ordinary people. It’s about which corporate giant gets to own more of the stack, from model to chip to machine.
MHS is initially available to a select group of organizations in science, robotics and manufacturing as part of a research preview, Anthropic said. That’s the gatekeeping phase. Access first goes to a chosen few, while everyone else waits outside the velvet rope of corporate innovation. The company eventually plans to open-source the standard, which means any device manufacturer in any industry will be able to adopt it. Anthropic open-sourced another popular standard called the Model Context Protocol in 2024, which makes it easier to connect AI agents and data sources.
What the Company Says It’s For
Anthropic says the standard is meant to help machines communicate more easily. It says the system can work with any device that has a programmable interface. It says the goal is efficiency. Those are the official words, polished for investors, customers, and the broader machinery of consent.
But the structure is plain enough. A private company is moving into the infrastructure of physical production, building standards that could shape how scientific research and advanced manufacturing operate. It’s a familiar pattern: the bosses of the digital economy don’t stay in the cloud if there’s another layer of control to capture. They reach for the hardware too.
The company’s own language makes the stakes clear. Anthropic said MHS is meant to reduce setup and integration time for companies. Elizabeth Kelly said it was built for science, enterprise, and industry. That’s not a public commons. That’s a corporate corridor, and the people at the bottom will be the ones expected to make it all run smoothly while the decisions stay upstairs.
