
The world's oceans reached their highest temperatures ever recorded during the weekend, with global ocean temperatures hitting 21.1 degrees Celsius, or 70 degrees Fahrenheit, on Friday and Saturday, according to Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus. The heat, driven by a growing natural El Nino and by human-caused climate change, is already stressing life in the water and on land, while the people who depend on the sea are left to absorb the damage.
Who Pays for the Heat
Burgess said the oceans are likely to warm further in the coming months. She called the record "another sign that our climate system is under strain and that the ocean is under immense pressure." That pressure doesn't stay abstract for long. Burgess said warming water becomes more acidic and contains less oxygen, which hurts food industries that depend on the sea. She also said it changes ocean currents and weather patterns, giving storms more power to dump more rain and making storm surges larger.

El Nino is already the same magnitude as recent events and continues to grow, and Burgess said it is expected to reach unprecedented levels at its peak.

Even that small note of adaptation sits inside a larger wreckage. Bruno and Worm warned about fishery collapse and food shortages.

Burgess said that as waters warm off Europe, people are seeing more jellyfish, and Bruno said the same may be happening on the U.S. East Coast. Worm said: "Jellyfish are usually opportunistic and like warm waters. So yes, I'd expect them to do a little better."
