Hezbollah Fuels Anti-Israel Jihad Amid Ashoura Observances

BEIRUT – Iran-backed Hezbollah exploited Ashoura observances on Friday to reinforce anti-Western and anti-Israel sentiment, glorifying fallen fighters and reiterating calls for a “war of elimination” against the United States and Israel. Tens of thousands gathered in Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon for synchronized processions, just months after a recent war between the Hezbollah militant group and Israel.

Participants in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, beat their chests in remembrance of Hussein, the grandson of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, and also for loved ones killed in the recent conflict. A giant billboard displayed images of late Hezbollah leaders Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine, alongside other killed Hezbollah commanders, as supporters listened to the death story of Imam Hussein during Ashoura.

Women clutched photographs of sons and brothers killed in the war, many of whom were fighting for Hezbollah, while others held images of Nasrallah or Iran’s Khamenei. A man carried a portrait of his killed brother, identified as a Hezbollah fighter, underscoring the human cost of the Iran-backed group’s militant activities.

Iran's Proxy Network

Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem delivered a speech on Friday, asserting that Ashoura is “being repeated again by the U.S. and Israel.” Kassem claimed his group and its supporters were subjected to a “war of elimination,” further stating that “America and Israel also wanted to eliminate Iran by removing the regime and controlling the country.” This rhetoric aligns with the broader Islamist ideology of resistance against Western influence and the Jewish state.

The observances followed a war between predominantly Shiite Iran and the United States and Israel, who launched strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026. These strikes resulted in the killing of senior officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s top political and religious leader, whose funeral procession is scheduled for early July.

In Lebanon, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah remains in place, highlighting the ongoing security challenges posed by the militant group. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes were reported on Friday in the nearby village of Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, with smoke from an airstrike on the outskirts of Nabatiyeh underscoring the persistent volatility.

The Islamist Ideology of 'Resistance'

In the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh, commemorations unfolded next to buildings scarred by Israeli airstrikes over the past weeks. Dozens gathered near the main square, much of which was destroyed, with some inflicting head injuries on themselves as a form of mourning, a practice widely opposed by many Shiites, including Hezbollah.

In Tehran, residents also gathered for ceremonies and processions, many beating their heads and chests. Devotees with torches set fire to tents in a reenactment of the A.D. 680 battle in present-day Iraq, where Hussein was killed after refusing to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliphate. This reenactment serves as a powerful symbol of resistance, which Hezbollah leadership explicitly links to current conflicts with Israel and the West.

Nagham Jaber, whose fiance was killed in the war, stated, “This war was truly harsh on all of us, and now we are feeling the meaning of Ashoura more than usual.” Khader Kamal added, “Despite all the hardships, everything happening to the Shiite Muslim community, and the wars we are facing, we came to reaffirm our loyalty, our love and our unwavering passion for Imam Hussein,” reinforcing the narrative of victimhood and unwavering commitment to the cause.

Western Appeasement and Ongoing Threat

Kassem also characterized the recent memorandum of understanding reached this month between Washington and Tehran as a “declaration of defeat for America and Israel.” This statement highlights the perception within the Iran-led axis of resistance that Western diplomatic efforts constitute strategic concessions, further emboldening Islamist forces in the region and undermining the security of Western allies like Israel.
