Elite Programs Get New AVCA-Intersport Showcase

The American Volleyball Coaches Association and Intersport will bring eight women’s college volleyball programs to Louisville for AVCA Match Point, a two-day championship featuring six named top teams and two more yet to be announced. The event will take place April 10-11, 2027, at Freedom Hall.

The announcement describes a partnership to promote volleyball but gives no financial terms. It doesn’t identify revenue arrangements, athlete compensation or public funding for the event. The six named programs are Nebraska, Louisville, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Wisconsin. Two more teams will complete the eight-team field.

The Field and Its Record

The event brings programs with substantial championship records into one bracket. Nebraska and Stanford have won a combined 14 national championships. Wisconsin won the most recent championship among the six named programs, in 2021; Kentucky won in 2020.

Pittsburgh has reached five consecutive NCAA Final Fours since 2021, according to the announcement. Louisville has reached two national championship games since 2022. The release cites these records as part of the field’s profile, but doesn’t explain how the teams were selected or provide selection criteria beyond naming the programs as top teams.

Six places are named now. Two spots remain open. The release doesn’t identify the athletes who will play or provide details about team participation agreements.

How the Event Is Structured

AVCA Match Point will use a bracket format, with each team scheduled to play three matches over two days. Every team will play twice on Saturday, April 10, and once on Sunday, April 11. The tournament will take place at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.

The format gives the eight programs a concentrated schedule, but the announcement doesn’t provide match times, ticket information, broadcast plans or details about bracket seeding. It also doesn’t say whether athletes or teams will receive compensation tied to the event.

The partnership announcement names no union, labor organization or athlete movement. It reports no strike, protest or other organized resistance. It also describes no government action or public agency role. No labor agreement or public-policy proposal appears in the information released about the tournament.

AVCA’s Stated Growth Plan

“Volleyball has tremendous momentum, and our partnership with Intersport will help us build on it by creating more opportunities for athletes, coaches and fans to engage with the sport throughout the year,” Jaime Gordon, CEO of AVCA, said in a release.

“AVCA Match Point is an important first step. It brings some of the best programs in the country together for meaningful spring competition and gives fans another reason to connect with our sport. We believe there is still tremendous room for volleyball to grow, and high-quality events like this helps move the sport forward.”

Gordon’s statement names athlete, coach and fan engagement, spring competition and growth as the partnership’s aims. The release doesn’t quantify expected attendance or revenue, and it doesn’t say how proceeds would be distributed. It provides no details about costs borne by participating athletes or the terms under which they will compete. The announcement sets the event’s date, venue, format and initial field; financial and labor arrangements remain unspecified.
