Ballon d’Or’s Voting Machine Crowns Harry Kane

Harry Kane won the men’s 2026 Ballon d’Or at London’s Palladium on Monday, October 26, after scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England. Journalists from the top-ranked football nations rank the candidates, points are assigned, and one player takes the prize. This year, voters chose the 33-year-old Bayern striker and England captain over Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé.

The machinery of recognition

French magazine France Football presents the award for the world’s best players. Its voting panel included one journalist from each of the top 100 Fifa-ranked men’s nations and the top 50 women’s nations. Each voter ranked a top 10, with points awarded on a descending scale. The criteria covered individual performance, team achievements, class and fair play.

The judging period ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026. Organizers presented 30 awards across the men’s and women’s game, including prizes for young players and teams. A defined panel, scoring system and ceremony set out the formal path to a decision. The award recognizes one individual, though voters weigh performances for both club and national teams.

Kane thanked teammates, coaches, family and fans after he took the stage. “Wow, wow, wow!” he said. “I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special.” He thanked Tottenham Hotspur, where guidance from coaches had helped him “live my dream,” and his parents, Pat and Kim, for years of sacrifice. He called his wife, Katie Goodland, his “best friend” and “biggest support.” His children were back in Bavaria. “This is a trophy we all celebrate,” he said.

Numbers, teams and the individual prize

Kane scored 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern across all competitions, plus 12 for England. His club goals helped Bayern win the German league and cup double. He also received the Gerd Müller Trophy as the season’s top goalscorer, finished as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer for a third consecutive season and won the European Golden Shoe. The Telegraph reported that he scored 19 more goals for Bayern than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues and reached 100 Bundesliga goals in 98 matches.

Kane also led England to the World Cup semifinals, scoring six goals during the tournament. He called the Ballon d’Or “beyond my wildest dreams” and said it was “massive for England, for our country.” He said he was proud to put England “back on the map.” But the award doesn’t erase the team results around him: Bayern fell to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League semifinals, while Kane and England lost the European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024.

A ceremony with its own disorder

The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony took place outside France for the first time. Organizers chose London as a tribute to Stanley Matthews, the first winner, in 1956. Thousands gathered on Oxford Street and nearby streets, and fans tried to break through security. Traffic and a backlog of arrivals delayed the ceremony, which began 45 minutes later than originally scheduled.

The online coverage had its own disorder. A Ballon d’Or spokesperson said nominee profiles had appeared inadvertently and “should in no way be considered as an indication of the final results or rankings.” The website also prematurely published articles naming Kane, Mbappé, Yamal and Lionel Messi as winners of the main prize, then took them down. The voting panel produced the public result. The leaked pages got there first.

Other winners included Alexia Putellas, who took the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, and Yamal, who won the men’s Kopa Trophy for a third consecutive year. Barcelona won women’s club of the year; Paris Saint-Germain won the men’s award. Kane thanked the people who helped build his career, while the ceremony and its ranking system placed one name at the top.
