Nebraska Bowl Projection Keeps Cornhuskers in Line

USA TODAY Sports again matched Nebraska with North Carolina State in its week five Pinstripe Bowl projection, putting both teams in a forecast that frames postseason football through rankings and matchups. Released Tuesday, the projection left Nebraska’s predicted destination unchanged. It’s not a bowl result; it’s a media forecast, and the season is still unfolding on the field.

The Ranking Machine

USA TODAY’s Big Ten sports page featured a ranking titled “Who are the best first-year college football coaches? We ranked all 31 of them.” The page also carried headlines about Week 5 questions, breakout starts by two SEC quarterbacks, a possible quarterback controversy involving Oregon and Dan Lanning, and picks for Top 25 games. Coaches, teams and games filled rankings, questions and predictions—the familiar machinery for turning a season into a hierarchy of winners, contenders and stories to watch.

The Big Ten section named Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, UCLA, USC, Washington and Wisconsin. Nebraska’s projected matchup with NC State has appeared since the preseason, and Tuesday’s update kept the pairing in place.

Nebraska entered week five at 4-0 after beating Michigan State 31-13 on the road. That’s the team’s best start since 2016. The article called the win imperfect, while saying it raised expectations for Nebraska, particularly with Matt Rhule in his fourth year as head coach. A record can look clean on paper even when the performance isn’t.

Records Set the Terms

Nebraska finished 7-6 last year. NC State finished 8-5. Those records sit behind the projected matchup, but neither determines what comes next; the projection remains a forecast, not a final placement. The scoreboard gives the figures, while the page gives the ranking and expected destination.

NC State returned to .500 by beating Appalachian State 41-31. The Wolfpack built a 28-7 halftime lead, then gave up 24 points in the next 22 minutes before pulling away in the fourth quarter with 10 unanswered points. Appalachian State kicked a field goal to end the first half after advancing from its own 25 to the Wolfpack’s 30 in under 40 seconds.

The Mountaineers opened the third quarter with a touchdown. Then they used an interception and an onside-kick recovery to score two more touchdowns and tie the game 31-31. The score swings tell a less tidy story than a projection can: a lead built, lost and recovered, with the final margin shaped by what happened on the field.

The Schedule Still Has Its Say

NC State was entering ACC play, with Louisville, Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina among its upcoming opponents. Nebraska’s schedule included Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon and Iowa; Illinois and Washington also presented challenges. Those are the stated tests ahead for the Cornhuskers, not guarantees of a bowl berth or a settled matchup.

The sports page offers a ranking of coaches and a projected bowl pairing, but Nebraska is still 4-0, and both teams have games to play. The Pinstripe Bowl forecast has stayed put since the preseason. The season hasn’t.
