Australia's most vulnerable bird and mammal species face potential extinction if the H5 strain of bird flu spreads inland, according to federal government analysis released this week that ranked the threat level of more than 2,000 native animals.
Five species are likely not to survive infection. Hundreds of others are expected to suffer severe population collapses. The Herald petrel, listed as critically endangered, sits under "extreme threat" alongside the endangered Christmas Island frigate and three other vulnerable seabirds: the Houtman Abrolhos lesser noddy, imperial shag, and Heard shag. More than 80 endangered and critically endangered species face "high" or worse threat rankings overall.
The first mass mortality of Australian wildlife from H5 bird flu was confirmed on an island off South Australia's south-east coast this week, marking a watershed moment for the continent's biodiversity. The virus, which mutated to a highly concerning strain 6 years ago, has already "swept through and decimated different species" in other countries, according to epidemiologist Raina MacIntyre.
The Species Under Siege
Mammals aren't spared. The endangered Tasmanian devil and eastern quolls rank among the highest-risk mammals. While they'd likely survive infection, their populations would face severe reductions. Dolphins, whales, sea lions, and seals could all experience significant population impacts if infected.
What makes Australia's situation uniquely precarious is the sheer unknowns. MacIntyre emphasized: "We have these unique species of wildlife that don't exist anywhere else in the world and it's unknown" how susceptible Australian marsupials and monotremes may be to bird flu. That uncertainty compounds the risk for creatures found nowhere else on Earth.
Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt acknowledged the stakes plainly. "This is likely to be a very serious event," he said, noting that bird flu will probably spread inland after dozens of coastal detections. The spring breeding season brings "additional risk factors" that could accelerate transmission.
The Funding Gap
Invasive Species Council CEO Jack Gough called the federal assessment "a list of doom." But his critique extended beyond the threat itself. The government's biosecurity response has been "excellent," Gough said, yet "funding to protect wildlife had gone backwards."
He laid out the real problem: "We won't be able to stop bird flu spreading through wildlife, so the best response to that needs to be dealing with all the other threats." That means removing feral cats, foxes, and rats from islands. It means ensuring wetlands stay connected and nesting habitats aren't destroyed. "That work hasn't been happening at a scale which reflects the seriousness of this list," Gough said.
He's calling for an "emergency" $200 million investment into wildlife resilience—separate from biosecurity spending. "This should have been funded three years ago when we started preparing for bird flu, but the next best time is right now before the spring breeding season."
Watt confirmed the government has invested about $47 million over the past couple of years in building up populations of threatened species, including work removing invasive predators. But the math suggests a significant shortfall between what's being spent and what conservation experts say is needed.
The Vaccination Reality
Vaccination won't solve this crisis. Wild bird populations can't realistically be vaccinated because the process requires two doses, and catching wild birds even once is difficult. Catching them twice for a booster is essentially impossible. Watt acknowledged this plainly: "It's hard enough to catch these birds once, let alone twice to give them a booster, so realistically it's not possible to vaccinate native birds."
The government is funding captive breeding in zoos and other facilities, where vaccination could theoretically work. But that's a backstop for extinction, not a solution for wild populations.
Australia's status as the last continent without bird flu has been a strange advantage—it bought time to prepare. Yet that preparation, by Gough's assessment, hasn't matched the scale of the threat. The spring breeding season approaches. The virus is already here.
