
Australia confirmed its first mass wildlife death from H5 bird flu this week, triggering federal warnings that the virus could devastate hundreds of native species with little warning and fewer solutions than most nations have enjoyed.
The federal government has now ranked more than 2,000 native birds and mammals by their vulnerability to the strain. Five species face "extreme risk" of extinction if the virus reaches them. More than 80 endangered or critically endangered species rank as "high" threat or worse. The Herald petrel, listed as critically endangered, tops the danger list alongside the Christmas Island frigate, Houtman Abrolhos lesser noddy, imperial shag, and Heard shag.
Invasive Species Council CEO Jack Gough didn't mince words about what the government's own analysis reveals. "The results are shocking, it really is a list of doom," he said. "Five bird species facing 'extreme risk'... basically if bird flu gets into these populations, extinction is what we can expect."
The Tasmanian devil and eastern quolls rank among the highest-risk mammals. They'd likely survive infection, but their populations would face severe reductions. Dolphins, whales, sea lions, and seals would also experience significant impacts if infected.
The Mutation Problem
Epidemiologist Raina MacIntyre emphasized the particular danger posed by this virus strain. "This virus, which is a special mutation that arose 6 years ago, has really caused an unprecedented pattern," she said. "What we've seen in other countries is how it's just swept through and decimated different species."
Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt acknowledged Australia's unique vulnerability. "We are the last continent in the world to have bird flu," he said. "It's quite remarkable that it hasn't come here already but what that's meant is that we have had time to make sure we're as well prepared as we possibly can be." Watt warned that the virus would likely spread inland after dozens of coastal detections, with spring breeding season presenting additional risks.
The government's preparedness investments, however, face a significant gap. Watt noted the government invested about $47 million over the last couple of years in building up populations of threatened species, including work removing feral cats, feral pigs, and other invasive species. Yet Gough argued this falls far short of what's needed.
The Funding Shortfall
Gough said the biosecurity response had been "excellent," but funding to protect wildlife had declined. "We won't be able to stop bird flu spreading through wildlife, so the best response to that needs to be dealing with all the other threats," he explained. He called for an "emergency" $200 million investment into wildlife resilience, separate from the government's biosecurity response. "This should have been funded 3 years ago when we started preparing for bird flu but the next best time is right now before the spring breeding season."
Vaccination offers no practical solution for wild populations. Watt explained the insurmountable challenge: "It requires two doses of vaccines, and it's hard enough to catch these birds once, let alone twice to give them a booster, so realistically it's not possible to vaccinate native birds." The government is instead funding captive breeding programs in zoos and other facilities, where vaccination might be feasible for the most threatened species.
MacIntyre highlighted another critical unknown. "We have these unique species of wildlife that don't exist anywhere else in the world and it's unknown" how susceptible Australian marsupials and monotremes are to bird flu. That knowledge gap compounds the challenge facing policymakers.

Market-based solutions and private conservation efforts, combined with targeted government spending on habitat protection and invasive species control, may be the only realistic approach to preserve species that exist nowhere else on Earth.
