State Liquidity Injects Billions into Crypto Speculation

The US Treasury announced Wednesday it would at least double its liquidity-support buybacks for 10-to-30-year debt. This move, increasing operations from up to US$2 billion to at least US$4 billion, immediately sent Bitcoin soaring to US$73,033 on Thursday, a 5.44% jump. Over US$1 billion in short positions were liquidated within one hour of the breakout, forcing bearish traders to buy back coins at higher prices and funneling wealth directly to those holding digital assets.

The expanded buybacks are set to begin on September 9. This state intervention marks Bitcoin's first reclaim of its 200-day moving average in nine months. The rally was further amplified by record spot-Bitcoin ETF inflows, totaling US$517 million on Thursday alone. Other major tokens also saw significant gains; XRP jumped 14.85% to US$1.2684, Ethereum closed at US$2,326 with a 3.33% increase, and Solana added 2.65% to reach US$87.64.

Capital's Gains, Public's Cost

Wednesday’s drop in long-term US yields made dollar-based safe assets less attractive for capital. This pushed investment toward riskier holdings, a direct consequence of the Treasury's actions. Analysts described the market movement as a "liquidity event," not a structural repricing of assets. This distinction is crucial: the state's injection of capital provides temporary relief for financial markets without addressing the underlying contradictions of the economic system. Whether the current price level holds depends on sustained spot buyer interest, rather than merely the unwinding of short positions. ETF and futures flow data will be the variable to watch next week.

A secondary political driver also fueled the speculative surge. On Wednesday, Donald Trump hosted crypto executives, including representatives from Coinbase and Ripple, at the White House. He urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, a piece of legislation that remains stalled. This political endorsement signals a move to further integrate and legitimize speculative digital assets within the existing financial framework, ensuring continued avenues for capital accumulation. The rally reverses a defensive tone that had dominated crypto markets for much of the northern summer.

Global Capital Flight, Local Hardship

For workers and the dispossessed in inflation-prone markets, particularly in Latin America, the implications are stark. A stronger Bitcoin and easier global liquidity typically reinforce demand for stablecoins. This occurs even without fresh local adoption figures, as citizens seek to protect their savings from the ravages of inflation that erode real wages and purchasing power. Falling US long-term yields reduce the appeal of holding dollars, further supporting demand for stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies in these economies.

A stronger Bitcoin also improves the collateral value of digital-asset portfolios held by Latin American investors. In countries like Argentina and Brazil, where crypto adoption has outpaced many larger economies, such rallies often translate into renewed retail interest. This dynamic highlights how systemic economic instability drives individuals into speculative markets, while the state's financial interventions primarily serve to inflate asset values for those already holding capital.
