Brazil’s government on Tuesday reduced its diplomatic presence in Argentina, an unprecedented move in recent history between the two South American neighbors. This action follows renewed attacks by Argentine President Javier Milei against his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
A spokesperson for Brazil’s foreign office confirmed that Milei has labeled Lula “a thief” three times since Sunday. Such rhetoric underscores the deepening ideological chasm between a nationalist leader and a regional establishment figure.
The Nationalist Challenge
Milei employed similar language on July 25, same year, at a party convention for Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of the former president who will challenge Lula in October’s election. During the same event, Milei also disparaged Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, calling him “trash.” This public condemnation of judicial figures highlights a broader challenge to institutional authority.
Justice de Moraes had previously denied a request from the Argentine president to visit former President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest serving a 27-year sentence for a coup attempt. The political alliances and antagonisms are clear.
Brazil had already recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, in July, same year, just a day after Milei’s initial remarks against Lula. Since then, Brazil’s interests in Argentina have been managed by a chargé d’affaires, a significantly lower-ranked diplomatic position.
The Brazilian foreign office spokesperson stated that Ambassador Bitelli will not return to Argentina as long as President Milei continues his aggressive comments toward Lula. Lula himself has remained silent on Milei’s remarks, maintaining a frosty relationship that began when the Argentine leader took office in December 2023, now in its third year.
Globalist Retaliation and Foreign Meddling
President Milei is a staunch ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration finds itself at odds with Lula’s government. This alignment reveals the international fault lines forming between nationalist movements and the established globalist order.
Earlier on Tuesday, the U.S. State Department revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington. This move was explicitly described as retaliation for Brazil’s denial of visas last month, same year, for two American diplomats who sought to visit ahead of Brazil’s upcoming elections. Such actions expose the intricate web of international pressure exerted on sovereign nations.
Lula was officially declared a candidate for reelection three days ago, at his Workers’ Party convention. During this gathering, many within the party voiced significant concerns regarding foreign interference in the country’s crucial vote. The specter of external influence looms large over national self-determination.
Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, a conservative who will again serve as Lula’s running mate, made a pointed statement at the convention. He asserted that Brazil’s electronic voting system was so effective that “it doesn’t accept any votes from Argentines and Americans,” a direct reference to Milei and Trump. This remark underscores the deep-seated anxieties about national sovereignty and the integrity of the electoral process against perceived external manipulation.
