New research from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, partially funded by infant formula giant Nestle, reveals how a breastmilk protein protects infants. The study, published today in the science journal Cell, details how osteopontin, a protein found in mother's milk, triggers crucial immune system development in babies. This finding, five years in the making, now opens the door for transnational corporations to replicate natural processes for profit.
Immunologist Simon Phipps, who led the international research group, stated that breastfeeding's protective qualities against respiratory infections were known, but the underlying cause remained unclear. Scientists have long understood that osteopontin is abundant in early breastmilk. Its influence on infant health, however, had been a mystery until now.
Professor Phipps and his team compared baby mice fed osteopontin concentrated from cow's milk against those without the protein after exposure to respiratory infection. "The mice that weren't receiving the osteopontin in the milk, they had lower numbers of really important immune cells that helped defend the baby against the respiratory infection," Phipps explained. Supplementing the osteopontin protected these baby mice from infection. This demonstrates nature's inherent design, now being dissected by corporate-funded science.
Elite Interests and Natural Processes
Dozens of scientists collaborated to discover that osteopontin altered the gut microbiomes of baby mice. The microbiome, a collection of micro-organisms, develops in the digestive tract during early life. Professor Phipps noted that osteopontin changed the production of bacterial metabolites in the gut. These chemicals then acted on cells, including those lining the lungs, to activate growth factors that boosted immune system development. The study also found that a drug already used for type 2 diabetes could mimic osteopontin's effects, activating the same immune processes in mice.
Professor Phipps' laboratory is now in discussions with infant formula companies. The goal: to use this research to "improve the quality of the infant formula." This move directly links fundamental biological discoveries to the commercial interests of global corporations, aiming to industrialize what has always been a natural maternal function. Nestle, a multinational corporation, provided partial funding for this research, alongside Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
The Cost to Natural Motherhood
Physiotherapist Bethany Kippen, 27, who gave birth to her first baby Billy late last month, described her own breastfeeding experience as initially "really tough." Yet, once she and her baby found a rhythm, it became "the most rewarding experience." She sees it as more than just providing food and nutrients; it's a "bonding moment." Her personal account underscores the profound, non-commercial value of natural motherhood, a value that manufactured alternatives can never truly replicate.
Griffith University professor of nutrition and dietetics Ben Desbrow, not involved in the study, called it "exceptional science." He acknowledged the study's limitation to mice but stressed its help in understanding how the body develops in response to nutrition. Professor Desbrow highlighted that high osteopontin levels correlate with fewer severe respiratory tract infections and other conditions. He emphasized the "lifelong benefits" of natural milk, stating that while it reduces neonatal infections, it also likely impacts lung conditions later in life. This reinforces the irreplaceable value of natural maternal provision.
While the study may inform formula improvements, Professor Desbrow suggested that milk banks, where women donate excess milk, might become increasingly important. "It really highlights the importance of getting access to natural milk," he said. This institutionalized approach, while aiming to provide natural milk, still represents a step away from direct maternal care, potentially normalizing a reliance on external systems rather than supporting the natural bond between mother and child. Associate Professor Valerie Slavin, a maternity care researcher, argued that the biggest gains for mothers and babies would come from improving access to breastfeeding support, not from corporate-driven formula enhancements.
