Biotech Firms Privatize Allergy Solutions, Breed New Markets

Kindred Companion Sciences, a biotechnology firm, announced it bred two beagles, Bailey and Alfie, in September 2024 using CRISPR-based gene editing. This corporate endeavor marks the first reported instance of genome editing applied to modify dog allergens, opening a new frontier for capital accumulation in the pet industry. The company claims these animals do not produce Can f 1, the primary dog allergen found in dander or saliva.

Veterinary examinations reportedly show both dogs are experiencing normal growth and development. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved the company's gene-editing tools. Kindred Companion Sciences maintains its genetic editing was conducted in accordance with U.S. federal standards for animal care and use, a claim that highlights the state's role in overseeing, but not necessarily challenging, the expansion of private biotechnological ventures.

Engineering for Profit

Dog and cat allergies affect a significant portion of the global population, estimated at 10% to 20% by the National Institutes of Health. Existing strategies for managing these allergies primarily focus on controlling the body's immune response, rather than addressing allergen production at its source. A March 2024 study, also published by the National Institutes of Health, confirmed that no dog, cat, or horse breed is truly hypoallergenic. The company's August study itself stated, "Breeds marketed as hypoallergenic do not yield consistently lower environmental exposure," and "These approaches do not alter the underlying expression of Can f 1, which is produced from sebaceous glands and tongue epithelial tissue." This framing positions Kindred Companion Sciences' product as a superior, market-driven solution to a widespread public health issue, ripe for surplus extraction.

The popularity of so-called hypoallergenic dogs has grown in recent years, exemplified by the Obamas acquiring Portuguese Water Dogs, Bo in 2009 and Sunny in 2013, due to Malia Obama's canine allergies. This established market for specialized pets now faces disruption by a new, technologically advanced commodity. Sebaceous glands are oil-producing glands on the skin, and tongue epithelial tissue forms the tongue's outer layer of cells; these are the biological sites targeted for modification.

New Frontiers for Capital

Kindred Companion Sciences' work is part of a broader trend in the manipulation of animal genes for commercial purposes. Last year, Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based genetic engineering company, announced it had brought the dire wolf back from extinction. This venture involved breeding three dire wolf puppies using extracted DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull. Researchers created two dire wolf genomes from these ancient specimens, comparing them with other canid species. They then edited 14 genes found in modern gray wolves to match specific extinct traits. Domestic dogs served as surrogate mothers for these engineered wolves.

These developments underscore how capital continually seeks new avenues for profit, transforming biological processes and even extinct species into commodities. The focus remains on technological solutions that can be privatized and sold, rather than addressing underlying systemic issues or ensuring equitable access to health solutions. The state, through its regulatory bodies, largely facilitates this expansion, ensuring corporate adherence to minimal standards while allowing the market to dictate access and innovation.
