St. Croix Sets Dates for Crucian Christmas Festival

The Crucian Christmas Festival will run from 26 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Free nightly performances are planned for downtown Frederiksted, and parades will take place during the first two days of the new year. The Department of Tourism and Division of Festivals announced the dates on 14 September. The programme isn’t fully released yet: the Festival Village lineup, event times, parade routes and prices for pageants and competitions weren’t available by 29 September.

The annual carnival is St. Croix’s main festival. “Crucian” is the word islanders use for people and things from St. Croix. The Department of Tourism traces the event’s roots to the 1800s, when enslaved Africans on the island had time off at Christmas, made costumes at home and danced in the streets. The modern festival began in 1952.

A calendar rooted in St. Croix

The Festival Village will occupy a temporary waterfront site in downtown Frederiksted, at the island’s western end. Local, regional and international artists are scheduled to perform there each night, and fireworks are planned for 2 January. Performances are free. Local vendors will sell food, drinks and crafts separately; there’s no official price list, and information about vendors’ accepted payment methods wasn’t available.

The programme includes boat races and the Crucian Gold STX Breakfast Fete, a breakfast party, on Sunday 27 December. The Food Fair, featuring dishes such as stuffed patés and seafood, is scheduled for Wednesday 30 December. J’ouvert, an early-morning street party with dancing through Frederiksted, is set for Thursday 31 December. The All White Celebration marks Old Year’s Night, the local name for New Year’s Eve.

The Children’s Parade is scheduled for Friday 1 January 2027, followed by the Adults’ Parade on Saturday 2 January. The parades feature floats, bands and costumes with feathers and sequins. The St. Croix Tourism visitor guide says local law sets the parades on the first Friday and Saturday of the new year; in 2026–27, those dates fall on 1 and 2 January, one day earlier than the previous season.

Events before the main festival

The build-up starts in December. The Prince and Princess Pageant is set for 5 December, the Junior Calypso Show for 6 December and the Miss St. Croix Pageant for 13 December. The Calypso Monarch Competition is scheduled for 18 December, followed by Madras Mas on 20 December and the JFL Crucian Christmas Hospital Show on 21 December. Calypso is a sung, often satirical Caribbean music style; the monarch is the year’s winning singer. The Department of Tourism’s calendar also lists 5 December as the festival’s first day.

St. Croix was Danish until it passed to the United States in 1917. Slavery ended after the 1848 revolt led by General “Buddhoe” Gottlieb. St. Croix is now a U.S. territory. The Department of Tourism says U.S. citizens travelling from the mainland or Puerto Rico don’t need a passport, while visitors of other nationalities need the same documents required to enter the United States.

The previous festival edition ended on 3 January 2026. Its lineup, announced in November 2025, included Kes the Band as the final-night act, along with Morgan Heritage, Romain Virgo and Nadia Batson. The 2026–27 Festival Village lineup hasn’t been announced; the release said programming would follow. The previous season’s lineup was released on 10 November.

Flights arrive at Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport. United Airlines is scheduled to begin weekly Saturday nonstop service from Newark, near New York, on 31 October 2026, arriving at 1:20 p.m. local time. St. Croix uses Atlantic Standard Time, one hour ahead of New York in winter, and traffic drives on the left. Frederiksted is on the west end of the island, while Christiansted is on the north-east coast.
