Davidovich Fokina Ends Zverev’s Shanghai Run

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat top seed Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 on Oct. 17, 2026, to reach the Shanghai Masters final. The 25th seed struck 36 winners across two hours and two minutes, earning his second victory over Zverev in eight meetings.

How the Match Turned

Zverev won the opening set 7-5. Davidovich Fokina broke him for the first time in the match to take the second set and force a decider. Then came an early break. It gave Davidovich Fokina a 2-0 lead in the third, and he kept control from there to seal the win and book a place in the second ATP Masters 1000 final of his career.

“I knew that if I stayed there all match, I could get at least one chance and I took it there in the second set,” Davidovich Fokina said. “Then in the third set, I think I was better physically. The early break in the third set gave me a lot of power. I focused on just playing, not mattering about the result but enjoying.”

His previous win over Zverev came in the round of 32 at the Canadian Open in 2023. Davidovich Fokina finished runner-up at Monte Carlo in 2022. He’ll meet 20-year-old compatriot Rafael Jodar in Shanghai’s final after Jodar beat fifth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4.

Zverev Cites Fatigue

World No. 2 Zverev said fatigue had caught up with him. The French and US Open champion plans to monitor his fitness before the Vienna tournament, which begins on Oct. 24, and called a break “quite necessary now.”

“I carried a little bit of injury, I carried fatigue into the tournament, and I'm okay to lose to a player like this today,” Zverev told reporters. He felt his ankle at times in Shanghai. The loss ended his tournament run, while Davidovich Fokina moved on to the final.

Other Tour Results

In Wuhan, world No. 170 Sonay Kartal beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) on Oct. 17 to become the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final. The 24-year-old Briton was playing her second tour event since returning from a six-month injury layoff. A spinal stress fracture sidelined her from March to September. Kartal reached a career-high ranking of 44 in the world 15 months earlier, and she’ll face either Poland's Iga Swiatek or Maja Chwaliska in the final. She is the lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist since the format began in 2009.

On Oct. 16, organisers announced Novak Djokovic had accepted a wild card for the ATP 500 tournament in Basel later in October. The 39-year-old is seeking to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. He last played in Basel in 2011, after three appearances there. Djokovic won the 102nd title of his career in Beijing earlier in October, then lost his opening match at the Shanghai Masters. The seven-time ATP Finals champion has dropped to 11th in the Race to Turin standings; only the top eight qualify for the Nov. 15-22 tournament.
