Brussels Bypasses Nations in Covert Russia Outreach

The European Union has initiated clandestine diplomatic contacts with Moscow, seeking to establish communication channels regarding the conflict in Ukraine, even as it publicly reaffirms support for Kyiv. This quiet outreach, confirmed by anonymous EU officials, reveals a transnational elite maneuvering to secure its "specific interests" in any future peace talks, effectively sidelining the sovereign nations it purports to represent.

These "brief contacts" at a diplomatic level have been made in the past few weeks, though "nothing was discussed on substance," according to an EU official with knowledge of the approach. A second official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the Russia outreach is taking place.

The outreach occurs against the backdrop of escalating conflict, with Ukraine launching one of its largest drone attacks since Russia’s all-out invasion more than four years ago. Russian officials reported a major Moscow oil refinery was hit for a second time in a week, and commercial flights at Moscow airports were disrupted.

The EU official stated that "in any future scenario, the EU has specific interests that will need to be defended, therefore it is important to have established diplomatic channels with Russia." This declaration positions the supranational body as having distinct interests separate from those of individual member states.

The same official clarified that "the EU is not a mediator" but "supports Ukraine in its efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace," indicating a predetermined stance while simultaneously seeking direct communication with the opposing party.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously asserted that Europe cannot play a mediation role in settling the conflict, though he has not ruled out speaking to the EU. He stated earlier this month, "We have never refused contacts with representatives of the European Union in any format. We are not rejecting contacts. If they want to talk, they know how to reach us."

Putin added, "They can pick up the phone and call. If they want to come, they are welcome to do so. It is not Russia that is refusing engagement," highlighting a direct challenge to the EU's self-appointed role and suggesting a preference for direct state-to-state engagement over supranational intermediaries.

Elite Maneuvers and Sovereignty Transfer

European Council President Antonio Costa has been coordinating closely with European leaders on possible engagement with Russia and the issues to be discussed, according to officials. This centralized coordination bypasses direct national foreign policy initiatives.

News of these moves emerged as EU leaders convened in Brussels for their summer summit today, where Ukraine was a primary agenda item. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was expected to address the 27 leaders, who were seeking closer ties with Kyiv.

This Monday, Ukraine officially opened negotiations to join the EU, initiating a process that will demand its government commit to years of political reforms. This commitment represents a significant transfer of national policy control to Brussels, even as the nation remains embroiled in conflict.

The development also closely followed this week’s meeting of the world’s seven leading industrialized nations in Evian-Les-Bains, France. There, "Europeans managed to get Trump to join G7 leaders in offering 'unwavering support for Ukraine'," demonstrating a unified globalist front on foreign policy.

The Cost of Supranational Ambition

President Zelenskyy stated his country secured key pledges of further support from world leaders attending the G7 summit, including the United States, reinforcing the role of international bodies in dictating national commitments.

The EU's pursuit of its "specific interests" through covert diplomatic channels, while simultaneously pushing for the "reforms" of nations like Ukraine, illustrates a systematic reduction of self-determination for sovereign peoples in favor of a post-national order.
