Lagarde, BlackRock and the Davos Club

Christine Lagarde could be set to take charge of the World Economic Forum at some point in 2027, according to a Swiss newspaper report that lays out, in one neat little package, how Europe’s monetary elite and corporate power brokers keep passing the same chair around the same room. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung said Lagarde had been referred to as a "putative candidate" for the position of WEF president during a board meeting near Geneva earlier this week.

The Davos Circle Decides

Lagarde, who sits on the WEF's Board of Trustees, has thanked fellow board members for their confidence in her and said she is "ready to serve," the outlet said, citing unnamed sources. That phrase does a lot of work. It sounds like duty. It reads like succession planning inside a private club that likes to dress itself up as global governance. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the president of Singapore, is said to have led the succession discussion during the meeting and stressed that the issue should be "resolved internally," according to the NZZ. Internally, of course. Not by anyone outside the room. Not by the people who live with the consequences of the decisions made by these institutions.

The WEF is currently co-chaired by BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and André Hoffmann, the vice chairman of Roche. That’s the cast. Finance, pharmaceuticals, central banking, and the polished language of stewardship. The board had not yet come to a decision on when Lagarde should take over as president, the NZZ reported, but Fink and Hoffmann should still preside over the WEF's annual Davos meeting, which is set to take place in January. The machinery keeps moving. The faces may shift. The structure doesn’t.

Europe’s Monetary Bosses, Same Old Club

Lagarde has been president of the ECB since 2019 and is due to leave her role in October 2027 when her eight-year term draws to a close. There has been mounting speculation over her future in recent months and whether she could leave the ECB earlier, partly fuelled by Lagarde's own comments on her possibly taking part in the upcoming French presidential election campaign. The speculation itself is part of the theatre. A central banker with one foot in Frankfurt and another in the Davos circuit, drifting toward the French electoral circus while insisting the real framework is Europe’s.

Speaking to Euronews in July, Lagarde ruled herself out of making a run for the French presidency itself, however. "I'm not a candidate for anything, but I'm very keen that Europe is protected, that Europe is the framework within which member states operate, including France," she said. There it is, plain enough. Europe as framework. Member states as operators. The language of protection, but for what and for whom? Not for the people pushed around by the decisions of the ECB, the WEF, and the boardrooms that orbit them. The protection on offer is for the architecture itself.

The ECB declined to comment on the report, while the WEF did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Euronews. Silence, naturally, from the institutions that prefer governance by closed meeting and unnamed sources. The public gets the polished quote. The board gets the real conversation.

January’s Davos meeting is still on the calendar, with Fink and Hoffmann set to preside, while the question of Lagarde’s future remains unresolved inside the same circles that keep presenting themselves as the adults in the room. The room, as usual, is locked.
