
Federal health officials added a new cyclospora outbreak to their investigation list Wednesday, with 72 confirmed cases and no identified source—raising fresh concerns about food safety gaps as the nation grapples with a massive lettuce-linked outbreak that's already sickened more than 11,000 people.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now tracks six active cyclospora outbreak investigations. Only one has an identified culprit: Taylor Farms-branded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, which has sparked more than 4,000 laboratory-confirmed cases across 41 states and an additional 7,400 suspected cases that haven't yet been confirmed. Two smaller outbreaks, affecting two and eight people respectively, have ended.
Why Detection Takes So Long
The delays in identifying outbreak sources aren't just bureaucratic red tape. They're rooted in the parasite's biology and the limits of current testing infrastructure.
Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, said earlier this month that cyclospora investigations "take a significant amount of time." Symptoms can appear anywhere from two days to two weeks after exposure, making it difficult for people to remember what they ate. Worse still, whole genome sequencing—the gold standard for tracking foodborne pathogens—isn't available for cyclospora. Investigators must rely on targeted genotyping, "which is useful for detection but not as fast and precise as whole genome sequencing," Biggerstaff explained.
That technical limitation means families waiting for answers about whether their illness is connected to recalled products face weeks of uncertainty. It also means investigators can't quickly trace contamination back through the supply chain to prevent additional exposures.
The Scope of Underreporting
The true scale of these outbreaks is almost certainly larger than official counts suggest. Cases are frequently underreported because many people who contract cyclosporiasis don't develop severe symptoms or require hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Standard stool sample testing doesn't detect the parasite, so unless a doctor specifically orders the right test, cases slip through undiagnosed.
Cyclospora causes cyclosporiasis, an illness typically reported between May and August each year. While travelers can acquire the parasite through contaminated food and water abroad, domestic cases are more commonly linked to fresh produce. Last year, an outbreak that sickened at least 69 people was traced to parsley.
The Lettuce Crisis Continues
In the largest ongoing outbreak, the FDA continues focusing on Taylor Farms-branded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, despite a false positive test result over the weekend that briefly suggested the contamination might be more widespread. Recalled products were distributed to dozens of states, though at least five states have confirmed cases linked to the outbreak.
The sheer scale of the lettuce outbreak—more than 11,000 confirmed or suspected cases—underscores how vulnerable the nation's fresh produce supply chain remains to contamination. Cyclosporiasis is unlikely to spread between people, meaning every single case represents direct contact with contaminated food or water.
What Consumers Can Do
Health experts recommend washing produce thoroughly before eating, cutting or cooking it. If cut, peeled or cooked produce needs refrigeration, it should be refrigerated as soon as possible. Experts also recommend cutting away any damaged or bruised areas of fruits and vegetables before using them—though these precautions can't guarantee safety when contamination occurs at the source.

The lack of advanced sequencing technology for cyclospora means investigators work with one hand tied behind their backs, unable to quickly trace contamination or rule out sources. Families in 41 states are now dealing with illness from the lettuce outbreak alone, with thousands more cases suspected but not yet confirmed. The underreporting problem means the true human cost—lost work days, medical bills, and suffering—remains invisible in official statistics. Without better detection tools and stronger oversight of the produce supply chain, particularly imports from regions with different safety standards, consumers will continue bearing the risk and the consequences when contamination occurs. The new 72-case outbreak with no identified source suggests this summer's cyclospora season is far from over, and families deserve a food safety infrastructure that can respond faster and more precisely to protect public health.
