The U.S. Food and Drug Administration added a new cyclospora outbreak to its active investigation list Wednesday, with 72 cases reported and no identified source yet determined. This marks the sixth active cyclospora investigation currently underway at the federal agency.
The new outbreak isn't connected to the massive iceberg lettuce recall that's already sickened more than 11,000 Americans. That outbreak remains the only one among the FDA's active investigations with a confirmed source—Taylor Farms-branded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico.
Investigation Challenges
Tracking cyclospora presents significant obstacles for federal health officials. Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, said earlier this month that cyclospora investigations "take a significant amount of time." The parasite's incubation period ranges from two days to two weeks before symptoms appear, complicating efforts to trace contamination sources.
The technical limitations are stark. Whole genome sequencing isn't available for cyclospora, forcing investigators to rely on targeted genotyping instead. Biggerstaff noted this method "is useful for detection but not as fast and precise as whole genome sequencing." That's a critical handicap when trying to contain outbreaks quickly and identify supply chain problems.
The Lettuce Outbreak
The ongoing lettuce-linked outbreak has reached alarming proportions. As of Wednesday, federal officials confirmed more than 4,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across 41 states. Another 7,400 cases that haven't received laboratory confirmation may also be connected. At least five states have been directly implicated, though recalled products were distributed to dozens of states nationwide.
The FDA continues focusing its investigation on Taylor Farms-branded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, even after a false positive test result surfaced over the weekend. That false positive highlights the difficulties investigators face in pinpointing contamination sources.
Pattern of Produce Contamination
Cyclospora causes cyclosporiasis, an illness typically reported between May and August each year. The parasite can be acquired through food and water by people traveling outside the U.S., but domestic cases are more commonly linked to produce. Last year's outbreak sickened at least 69 people and was traced to parsley.
Two other current outbreaks, affecting two and eight people respectively, are listed as ended. Cases of cyclosporiasis are frequently underreported, partly because those who fall ill don't always have symptoms or require hospitalization. Standard stool sample testing also doesn't detect the parasite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cyclosporiasis is unlikely to spread between people.
Consumer Precautions
Health experts recommend washing produce thoroughly before eating, cutting or cooking it. If cut, peeled or cooked produce is refrigerated, it should be done as soon as possible. Experts also recommend cutting away any damaged or bruised areas of fruits and vegetables before using them.
