Federal Raid Puts Omar Under State Investigation

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on Monday morning, Oct. 12, under a judicially authorized warrant secured by the Justice Department. Omar said she would “not be silenced,” calling the search part of President Donald Trump’s “intimidation” campaign. The department confirmed an ongoing federal criminal investigation but offered no other details.

A Warrant, and Few Answers

Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation. The Justice Department said it secured the warrant in the Washington area. Its statement was brief: “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”

Agents carried boxes from the residence. Photographs showed Homeland Security officers speaking with residents on 26th Street NE, leaving the home and standing beside unmarked vehicles. The investigation’s details weren’t immediately clear, and someone sent an email seeking comment to a representative for Omar on Monday.

The public account leaves a sharp imbalance. Federal agents entered a lawmaker’s home under a warrant, while the department has disclosed little about the investigation. The search came weeks before the midterm elections. PBS described Omar’s accusation as political intimidation by the Trump administration; the administration says the operation forms part of a criminal investigation.

The President’s Earlier Accusation

Trump announced in January on Truth Social that the Justice Department was investigating Omar. He wrote that Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Somalia, “left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars.” He added, “Time will tell all.” The base article gives no further details about the investigation or the basis for the search.

White House Border Czar Tom Homan confirmed on Fox Business on Monday morning that officials had executed a search warrant at Omar’s home. Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th District, including Minneapolis. First elected to the House in 2018, she’s known as a member of The Squad, a group of female lawmakers known for progressive views and pointed opposition to the Republican president.

The Washington Post described the search as intensifying long-standing immigration-related accusations from Republicans against Omar, the nation’s first Somali American lawmaker. Those accusations now sit alongside a federal search whose stated purpose is an ongoing investigation, while its particulars remain undisclosed.

Other Critics Under Scrutiny

Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer, the state’s highest-profile elected Republican, responded on X: “Nobody is above the law. HSI just executed a search warrant at Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C. home. We look forward to learning more details about this raid and investigation. ACCOUNTABILITY IS COMING!” His call for details came as the Justice Department had provided none beyond confirming the investigation.

The article also describes other legal scrutiny involving Trump’s critics and political opponents. Federal agents raided John Bolton’s home in August 2025; Bolton pleaded guilty to mishandling classified documents in June. Trump has sought to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over accusations of mortgage fraud and established a committee of inquiry to investigate her. Last September, he urged then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to move faster on criminal charges against California Sen. Adam Schiff, New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey, writing, “they're all guilty as hell.” He’s also floated investigating 2024 election foe Chris Christie over the “Bridgegate” incident.

No grassroots organizing, mutual aid or community response appears in the account. Instead, it records a home searched by federal agents, a department withholding investigative details and competing political claims about the operation.
