Finland Fast-Tracks Corporate Capital, EU Border Logic Revealed

Finland may grant provisional approval for Tesla's supervised Full Self-Driving software ahead of an EU-wide vote, a decision that illuminates the European Union's operational priorities. This potential move by Finland follows the Netherlands, which in April of the same year became the first European country to grant provisional approval for Tesla's FSD. The swift regulatory pathway for advanced corporate technology stands in stark contrast to the deliberate obstruction and criminalisation faced by those seeking safety and opportunity within the EU's borders.

Corporate Capital Prioritized

The potential for Finland to grant provisional approval for Tesla's software underscores a consistent pattern within the European Union: the expedited facilitation of corporate capital movement. The Netherlands already set a precedent in April of the same year by becoming the first European nation to provisionally approve Tesla's Full Self-Driving software. This rapid adoption by individual member states, even in advance of a collective EU decision, demonstrates a regulatory environment that is highly responsive to the demands of powerful corporations. The ease with which such advanced technology navigates national and prospective EU-wide approval processes reveals where the true focus of European governance lies.

The mechanism for an EU-wide rollout of Tesla's software, which would require a qualified majority of member states, further illustrates this prioritization. While the EU can mobilize its member states to achieve consensus for market access and technological integration, a similar political will is conspicuously absent when it comes to upholding fundamental human rights for all people. This disparity highlights how the EU functions as a neoliberal border regime, where the free movement of capital is paramount, while the free movement of people is systematically curtailed and criminalised.

Fortress Europe's Internal Mechanisms

The internal logic of Fortress Europe extends beyond its physical walls and maritime patrols; it is embedded in its regulatory frameworks and political decisions. The readiness of member states like Finland and the Netherlands to fast-track corporate products like Tesla's Full Self-Driving software reveals a system designed to serve economic interests above all else. This stands in stark opposition to the experiences of thousands of asylum seekers and migrants who face bureaucratic delays, detention, and deportation. The EU's capacity to streamline processes for corporate entities, requiring only a "qualified majority" for widespread implementation, exposes the selective application of its principles.

The thousands who perish in the Mediterranean, the violent pushbacks at land borders, and the inhumane conditions in detention centres funded by EU money are not accidental outcomes. They are the intended deterrent effect of a border regime that prioritizes the movement of capital and the maintenance of a divided working class. The swift consideration of Tesla's software by European nations, ahead of a broader EU consensus, serves as a stark reminder of who is welcomed and who is criminalised within the European political order. This structural bias reveals that the real crisis is the racist response to migration, not migration itself, as the EU continues to facilitate corporate expansion while building higher walls against human beings.
