
Thirty pieces of elkhorn coral were hauled from nurseries off the Florida coast to a hatchery on land Wednesday, as scientists feared warming waters could trigger a mass bleaching event this summer and wipe them out. The coral now sits at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science in Key Biscayne, Florida, where human hands and institutional control are being used to keep a species alive after the ocean itself has turned hostile.
Who Gets to Decide
Diego Lirman, an associate professor of marine biology at the University of Miami, said elkhorn coral populations were decimated by a 2023 heat wave and a less severe one in 2024. He said the damage left them functionally extinct from Broward County to the Florida Keys, meaning the remaining colonies are too small and too far apart to reproduce in the wild. That’s the brutal arithmetic of ecological collapse: the damage lands on the coral, while the decisions and delays sit elsewhere.
Lirman said heat causes coral to bleach, and that bleaching can be fatal if it lasts long enough. Researchers had been propagating the coral at coastal nurseries, but they decided to bring some ashore because of indications that 2026 will be “a really bad year” for bleaching, perhaps even worse than 2023. He said coral has been showing indications of heat stress as water temperatures rise. The sea is warming. The rescue operation is already playing catch-up.
What the Workers in the Water Did
Divers focused Wednesday on collecting genetically diverse coral pieces, wrapping each in wet bubble wrap and placing them in coolers before sanitizing them and putting them in tanks at the hatchery. Senior research associate Hesley Dalton reviewed the placement of elkhorn coral in a saltwater restoration tank with research assistant Julia Cafiero and interns Jennifer Dranetz and Jonathan Smotrich. Lirman said coral populations are living creatures that form reefs, which are globally important for seafood production, protecting coastlines from storm surges and tourism. Those reefs aren’t just pretty scenery for postcards and profit. They’re infrastructure for life, and when they fail, ordinary people pay first.
He said Florida coral has experienced four mass bleaching events in the past decade. “They seem to be blending into each other and corals are not getting time to recover,” he said. That line carries the whole mess in plain language. The system keeps pushing, the damage keeps stacking, and recovery gets denied.
What They’re Trying to Preserve
Lirman said the university exchanges coral with other researchers and facilities to preserve as much original genetic diversity as possible in nurseries and hatcheries, “so if one goes down you don’t lose the last remaining genetic information.” He said, “You never know: You may have some that are resistant to disease, some that are resistant to temperature, some that are resistant to acidification. Once we lose them, then that information is lost.”
That exchange network is the only thing standing between the coral and disappearance, at least for now. The university, other researchers, and facilities are trying to keep genetic material alive in tanks and nurseries because the wild no longer offers enough room, enough time, or enough stability. The coral didn’t choose this arrangement. The water changed around it, and now the rescue has to happen under fluorescent lights, in saltwater tanks, with interns tying living fragments to restoration structures while the heat keeps rising outside.
The whole operation is a grim little portrait of managed survival. The ocean has been pushed past what the coral can take, and the response is to move pieces of it inland, sanitize them, cool them, and hope the next round of heat doesn’t finish the job.
