Gaza Airstrike Kills Family of Three, Infant Among Dead

A pre-dawn Israeli airstrike killed three members of a Palestinian family, including a one-year-old child, in central Gaza on Sunday, underscoring the human toll of continued violence despite a formal ceasefire now in its first year. Hospital officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah confirmed receiving the bodies of Ibrahim Abu Mallouh, 38, his wife Alaa Majdi, 38, and their infant son Osama after the strike hit a residential apartment in the Al-Nuseirat camp. Approximately 10 people were wounded in the attack, according to the hospital.

Daily Violence Continues Under Ceasefire

Gaza remains gripped with daily violence despite the formal ceasefire in place since October, with both the Israel Defense Forces and Hamas accusing one another of violating the truce. At least 890 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, according to Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Four IDF soldiers have been killed in attacks by Gazans over the same period, with a fifth soldier killed in a friendly fire incident.

The military said on Sunday that it struck and destroyed several Hamas weapons storage facilities in central Gaza over recent days, but it did not comment about the three deaths. According to the military, three weapons warehouses hit Saturday contained anti-tank missiles, firearms, RPGs, vests and other combat equipment. A separate strike on Wednesday destroyed another Hamas weapons depot containing explosive devices, RPG launchers, hand grenades and ammunition magazines, the IDF said.

Military Justification and Civilian Impact

The military added that secondary explosions were identified following the strikes, indicating the presence of weapons inside the depots. The IDF says it carries out strikes to thwart imminent attacks or in situations where there is a threat to troops. Yet the death of a one-year-old child and his parents in a residential apartment highlights the risks such operations pose to civilians living in densely populated areas where weapons facilities may be located.

The conflict traces back to the October 7, 2023 Hamas massacre that killed some 1,200 people and saw another 251 taken hostage, now approaching its third anniversary. The war that followed has left Gaza's civilian population bearing an ongoing burden of violence, displacement, and loss.

Why This Matters:

The death of a one-year-old child and his parents in their home represents the human cost of military operations in densely populated civilian areas, even under a formal ceasefire. With 890 Palestinians killed in the first year of the ceasefire—a death toll that includes an unknown number of civilians—the truce has failed to provide the protection from violence that civilian populations require. The continuing cycle of strikes and casualties raises urgent questions about accountability mechanisms, the adequacy of safeguards for non-combatants, and whether existing frameworks can effectively protect families from becoming collateral damage. For Palestinian families in Gaza, the distinction between wartime and ceasefire has become increasingly meaningless when airstrikes continue to destroy homes and kill children.
