Venice Festival Rolls Out Red Carpet for Elite

George Clooney received the golden lion for lifetime achievement as the 83rd Venice Film Festival opened in Venice, Italy, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. The ceremony put the machinery of prestige on full display. Hollywood stars arrived on the red carpet, Danny Boyle’s “Ink” opened 11 days of screenings, premieres and awards, and the whole event ran like a polished ritual for the already celebrated.

Who Gets the Spotlight

Clooney posed for photographers at the opening ceremony and the red carpet for the film “Ink,” both alone and with Amal Clooney, Laura Dern, Bianca Balti, J Balvin and others. He was also shown using a photographer’s camera after receiving the honor and signing autographs at the opening ceremony and red carpet. The images do what these festivals always do: they turn fame into a public ceremony and make access itself look like achievement.

The golden lion for lifetime achievement was presented to Clooney by the president of the Venice Biennale Foundation, Pietrangelo Buttafuoc, during the opening ceremony, with Laura Dern standing alongside him. That’s the hierarchy in plain sight. The institution hands out the prize, the famous line up for the cameras, and the crowd gets the spectacle.

What the Festival Sells

The 83rd Venice Film Festival opened with 11 days of screenings, premieres and awards. Claire Foy, Jack O’Connell, jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal and director Danny Boyle also posed for photographers at the opening ceremony and red carpet for “Ink.” The gallery also showed Bianca Balti with Alessandro Cutrera. Every frame in the photo gallery reinforces the same order: a small circle of recognized names at the center, everyone else orbiting around them.

The gallery was curated by AP photo editors. The images were taken by Scott A Garfitt and Alessandra Tarantino for Invision/AP. Even the record of the event comes filtered through institutional gatekeepers, packaged and distributed as a polished product for public consumption.

The Ceremony and Its Audience

The opening ceremony made the festival’s priorities obvious. It wasn’t about ordinary people making art on their own terms. It was about prestige, access, and the careful staging of celebrity inside a major cultural institution. Clooney’s appearance, the red carpet poses, the autograph signing, and the camera-in-hand moment all fed the same machine: visibility for the famous, reverence for the institution, and a steady stream of images for the audience to consume.

Pietrangelo Buttafuoc presented the golden lion. Laura Dern stood beside Clooney. Danny Boyle’s “Ink” opened the festival. Those are the names the apparatus wants remembered. The rest is background noise, even when it’s dressed up as celebration.

The festival opened in Venice, Italy, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, and the pageantry began immediately. The red carpet did its job. The cameras clicked. The hierarchy smiled back.
