Google unveiled its Pixel 11 smartphone lineup Wednesday with an aggressive bet that artificial intelligence will reshape how people use phones—even as the company confronts rising hardware costs and questions about whether consumers actually want to upgrade.
The new devices, which include the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, put Gemini Intelligence at their core. This suite of AI features is designed to monitor what users are doing across apps and automatically take action: checking calendar availability, comparing flights, starting restaurant reservations, or flagging potential scams without being asked.
Rick Osterloh, Google's devices chief, told CNBC that the company believes AI could fundamentally change smartphone interaction. "For the last 10 to 15 years, not a lot has changed in how you use laptops and mobile phones," he said. "But we think that's about to change dramatically." He described Gemini Intelligence as "a totally new way to interact with a computer," using what he called agentic capabilities that let users "not only to find out information but to get things done."
What's striking here is the scope of data these systems require. Gemini Intelligence connects information from messages, calendars, maps and other Google services to function. That means Google's AI is operating at the intersection of your most intimate digital life—your location history, your communications, your plans. The company isn't framing it that way. But the architecture itself raises fundamental questions about surveillance, consent, and who controls the data flowing through these devices.
The Competitive Pressure and Data Stakes
Google finds itself in an unusual position: competing directly with Apple, one of its biggest AI customers. Apple is rebuilding Siri around Google's Gemini models, pursuing many of the same goals Google is now showcasing on Pixel. When asked whether Pixel gives Google an early advantage, Osterloh pushed back. "I think obviously Pixel and iPhone are going in very different directions," he said, pointing to features like scam detection, Rambler voice transcription technology, and deeper Android integration as distinguishing factors.
But the real tension isn't about features. It's about ecosystem control. Osterloh said he expects Gemini to "grow in importance and perhaps someday become the primary way that people use their phones, their laptops and other devices." That's not hyperbole about a better user experience—it's a statement about centralization of power over how people access information and conduct their lives.
Consumer Reluctance and the Upgrade Question
There's a practical problem underlying all this ambition: people aren't actually upgrading phones primarily because of AI. Counterpoint Research found that AI currently ranks around sixth or seventh among consumers' reasons for upgrading a smartphone, though it has climbed one to two spots recently. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, said compelling use cases and greater consumer awareness will be critical to converting interest into actual purchases.
Osterloh acknowledged that AI isn't yet the top reason people upgrade. That gap between corporate vision and consumer behavior matters. It suggests that the market alone may not drive adoption of these systems—which means companies will need to either make the technology genuinely indispensable or rely on other mechanisms (like forced obsolescence or ecosystem lock-in) to push upgrades.
Rising Costs, Falling Margins
Google is also navigating industrywide pressure as a shortage of memory components pushes hardware costs higher. "There's quite clearly a shortage of memory, both RAM memory and flash memory," Osterloh told CNBC. He said the squeeze is forcing consumer electronics companies to raise prices and indicated Google expects additional pressure on its own devices. "What's happening in the near term, I think, is everyone's needing to raise their prices," he said. "We've also discussed that we will need to raise ours, like all the other industry players."
This creates a squeeze that will likely hit lower-income consumers hardest. As flagship phones become more expensive, the gap between those who can afford the latest AI-enabled devices and those who can't will widen. That's not a market failure—it's a structural inequality baked into how tech companies price products when component costs rise.
