
Hundreds of people were again forced from their homes as Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted, intensifying its activity on Monday morning. The country's disaster management agency, CONRED, reported 659 individuals evacuated from eight villages in the immediate danger zone. They are now housed in temporary shelters, a familiar scene for communities living under the volcano's shadow.
Claudinne Ogaldes, executive secretary of CONRED, stated that approximately 10 additional communities were slated for evacuation throughout the day. Among those already moved were around 250 people from El Porvenir and the hamlet of Las Lajitas. CONRED issued warnings about ash spreading to nearby towns, prompting authorities to order further evacuations in southern communities surrounding the volcano.
The eruption's immediate impact also shut down National Route 14, a major highway running close to the mountain. This closure disrupts vital transportation links. Furthermore, the Education Ministry suspended classes in affected towns, halting schooling for countless children in the region.
Who Bears the Cost
Fuego, a formidable part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, stands as one of Central America's most active volcanoes. Its frequent eruptions consistently threaten the livelihoods and safety of those residing in its vicinity. These are often communities with limited resources, tied to land that offers both sustenance and peril.
The current crisis echoes the devastating eruption of June 2018, which claimed hundreds of lives and obliterated an entire village. That event impacted as many as 1.7 million people, according to official figures. Another eruption just last year, in June 2025, also spurred preventive evacuations, demonstrating a recurring pattern of displacement for these communities.
The State's Reactive Measures
CONRED's actions, including the immediate evacuation of residents and provision of temporary shelters, represent the state's standard response to such natural disasters. These measures manage the immediate symptoms of the crisis. They do not, however, address the underlying conditions that compel large populations to reside in areas of extreme geological risk, nor do they offer lasting solutions to prevent repeated displacement.
The cycle of eruption, evacuation, and temporary shelter continues for Guatemala's most exposed communities. While authorities ensure immediate safety, the structural questions of land use, economic development, and long-term resilience for these populations remain unaddressed by the state's current framework.
