Three people were killed and 30 wounded in at least six separate shootings near major university campuses across the United States during a weekend of Halloween, homecoming and football rivalry events, the New York Post article reported. At the University of Colorado in Boulder, police shut down a house party and told revelers to go home. About 90 minutes later, police said, two men tried to force their way into the party. A 19-year-old student was killed, and another student was wounded.
Victims and people caught in the shootings paid the price as crowds gathered for celebrations near universities and in Birmingham, Alabama. The incidents included shootings near the University of Delaware, Michigan State University, the University of Colorado, Illinois Wesleyan University and Indiana University, along with multiple shootings in Birmingham. Reports describe police orders, detentions and weapons recovered, but no organized community response or mutual-aid effort.
When Police Orders Meet a Party
Hundreds of students attended the large house party in Boulder around 11:30 p.m. Police said they believe two suspects tried to force their way in after officers shut down the event and told revelers to leave. Police have identified two suspects. The report offers no further details about the police order or what happened during the attempted entry.
In downtown Newark, Delaware, at least six people were wounded when a gunman opened fire around 11 p.m. on a packed street near the University of Delaware. Costumed students fled. Near Michigan State University in East Lansing, a person wearing a Michael Myers mask opened fire and wounded one person, Metro Detroit News reported. A second person was wounded in a separate shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. It wasn't clear whether the shootings were related.
Crowds, Casualties and Police Accounts
After the 85th Magic City Classic football game Saturday night, multiple shootings in Birmingham killed one person and wounded eight. One victim was critically wounded. The game pits Alabama A&M against Alabama State, both historically Black universities. Witnesses described chaotic scenes at a tailgate outside Birmingham's Legion Field shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, AL.com reported. Police Chief Michael Pickett called the shootings “two senseless acts of violence.” Police detained one person in connection with the shooting.
Near Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman was killed and seven other people were wounded. One victim went to a hospital in critical condition. Two Illinois Wesleyan students and an Illinois State University student were among those injured, WGLT reported.
At least seven people—four men and three women—were injured in a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue near Indiana University around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo told WTHR that officers heard “multiple gunshots” after an argument among a large crowd of Halloween revelers in the popular bar strip. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 27, and none were students or from Bloomington. Police took an 18-year-old into custody but haven't said whether he was the gunman.
What the Authorities Reported
Police said they found an AR-15-style handgun at the Indiana scene and an AK-47-style pistol on one of the victims. They also found shell casings of multiple calibers. Indiana University celebrated homecoming and an overtime win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers earlier Saturday, alongside Halloween festivities. The account records the police response and weapons recovered; it describes no election or legislative proposal, nonprofit intervention, or community-led action.
