Upsets Reshape College Football Rankings and Playoff Hopes

Five of the top seven teams in the Associated Press Top 25 lost on the same regular-season day for the first time in the poll’s history. The poll began in 1936. On Saturday, No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas all fell. Eight ranked teams lost overall, and Nos. 1 and 2 hadn’t both lost on the same regular-season day since 2012.

Miami, 6-0, had to fight for its win. The Hurricanes survived a double-overtime game against rival Florida State, winning 43-35, and stood to claim the AP poll’s top spot for the first time since 2002. Elsewhere, No. 4 Ohio State, 6-1, beat Indiana 19-15. No. 8 BYU, 6-0, beat Notre Dame 28-24. No. 9 Mississippi, 5-1, routed No. 13 Missouri 31-3. No. 10 Texas Tech, 6-0, beat Arizona State 53-25, while No. 11 Utah, 6-0, held off Colorado 27-24.

Georgia’s Fall at Home

Georgia lost 27-24 at home to unranked Auburn, which clinched the win on Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal. Auburn beat a No. 1 team on the road for the first time since 2007, according to the Fox report. It was also the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks, after Texas lost to Oklahoma the previous week. Fox reported that Georgia had won 53 straight games against unranked opponents before Saturday.

Auburn’s offense looked messy. Gunner Stockton threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Yet the game remained tied 24-24 with 58 seconds left. Auburn then drove 40 yards, helped in part by a Georgia penalty, before McPherson made the winning kick. Georgia’s players watched the drive end in a loss they couldn’t have predicted a week earlier.

The Final Play in Provo

BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo, but the game ended on a disputed final play. With one second left, Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr threw into the end zone. The pass was deflected and fell incomplete. The Athletic said the play should have drawn a pass-interference flag against BYU. The Big 12 later said one more second should have remained on the clock.

The conference’s statement left little room for ambiguity. “Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew. The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.” Fox reported that the correct ruling would have given Notre Dame one final play from the BYU 8-yard line. Thousands of fans rushed the field after the final whistle, leaving the outcome marked by an asterisk for a team that had every reason to expect a chance to tie or win.

Playoff Stakes and the SEC

The losses reach well beyond one weekend. The Athletic said the SEC had no unbeaten teams in conference play and that 11 SEC teams had one or two losses. The outlet reported the SEC was 38-2 in nonconference play, including 10-2 against other power conferences. This season also marked the first with a nine-game SEC schedule. The Athletic noted that no 9-3 team had ever reached the 12-team College Football Playoff as an at-large selection, a fact that could cost SEC teams playoff places.

For the programs involved, the stakes are personal as well as competitive. Alabama lost to Tennessee, which celebrated at Neyland Stadium with cigar smoke; Alabama had already lost to Georgia the previous week. Fox reported that Alabama, Georgia and Texas hadn’t all lost on the same weekend since 1996. Texas lost 27-24 at home to Florida, its second consecutive loss, as Florida’s backup quarterback made his first career start. The Athletic said Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was paying lip service to the possibility of benching Arch Manning. Fox reported that Sarkisian had vowed to “evaluate everything” and wouldn’t rule out a change.

The SEC rankings brought another twist. The Athletic put Kentucky first after its 21-13 win at Oklahoma, followed by Tennessee, Auburn, Florida and Ole Miss. Georgia fell to sixth. The outlet called the ranking one of “vibes,” reflecting momentum and general impressions rather than a pure assessment of team quality or playoff chances.

Fox also discussed a planned expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams the following season, a decision it said had been agreed to before the weekend. The outlet questioned whether a larger bracket could change what the regular season means. Fox noted that teams had spent more than $35 million to assemble rosters and discussed parity in the NIL-revenue-sharing era, a reminder that the money now flowing through the sport isn’t evenly distributed.

Why This Matters:

Saturday’s results showed how much weight one missed call, one drive, or one pass can carry for players, coaches and fans. The Big 12 has now admitted that a replay crew cleared a play when time should have remained, and it has promised a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process. That accountability matters: the consequences land on young athletes and schools that depend on postseason access. The SEC’s uncertain playoff picture, along with a 24-team expansion that hasn’t yet been detailed, raises a broader question about who gets a seat at the table. Parity in a system where teams have spent more than $35 million on rosters is a question of fairness. The answers will shape which programs can compete for national titles in the years ahead.
