Australia's data centre construction boom promises thousands of jobs, but the long-term employment picture tells a different story. While building these massive facilities can support up to 10,000 workers during construction, operational staffing often drops to just 20-88 full-time employees once the doors open.
The nation's 251 existing data centres house the servers powering Google's AI search results, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. More facilities sit in the development pipeline as Australia ranks among the world's biggest investors in data centre infrastructure, according to the Global Data Centres Report 2025 released by Knight Frank.
The Construction Reality
A Brookings Institution report found data centre construction generates substantial short-term employment, with one study estimating between 1,000 and 10,000 workers depending on facility size. Construction of an individual data centre building typically takes 12 to 18 months, with approximately 1,500 workers on site at peak activity, according to a Virginia state government report.
But here's the catch. That same Virginia report found a 23,226 square metre data centre — roughly three NRL fields — "may have approximately 50 full-time workers, about half of which are contract workers" once operational.
A UK government report confirmed the pattern: "Data centres are highly automated facilities, and the number of jobs directly created is relatively modest, ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds." Two UK operators estimated only 20-88 full-time employees were needed on site.
The Brookings Institution warned data centre advocates "overstate" potential employment benefits.
Resource Demands and Government Expectations
These warehouse-like structures consume enormous resources. A 1 megawatt data centre uses 25.5 million litres of water annually for cooling — more than 10 Olympic swimming pools' worth. Sydney Water projected data centres could consume roughly a quarter of the city's yearly drinking water by the end of the 2020s, approximately 87.5 billion litres.
The Climate Council says data centres used 2 per cent of Australia's total electricity last year, with projections jumping to 6 per cent by decade's end.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese outlined new expectations for the AI industry, including that data centres minimise energy demand and emissions and "secure new and additional clean energy generation or storage to offset demand." He also expects transparent reporting on water usage and efficiency and climate change resilience built into operations.
Labour Market Concerns
University of Melbourne senior lecturer in construction technology M. Reza Hosseini warned the construction boom could create worker shortages for housing. "Data centre construction demands highly specialised trades like high-voltage electricians, industrial cooling technicians and advanced mechanical engineers — jobs that only partly overlap with residential building," he said.
"But in a market already stretched thin, even partial overlap matters."
Hosseini added: "When a hyper-scale project offers premium wages to secure electricians for 18 months, those workers are unavailable for housing."
The Job Market Today
At the time of writing, more than 1,100 job listings for data centre technicians appeared across Australia on SEEK.com. Compensation reflects the specialized nature of the work. One Melbourne technician listing offered $149,000 salary plus an annual $14,900 bonus. An HVAC service technician position offered up to $55 per hour for installing and servicing cooling towers at data centres in Sydney and across NSW.
A senior facilities technician listing for Melbourne offered $145,000 to help operate "a hyper-scale data centre facility due to go live later this year." A day shift electrical technician position in Sydney listed compensation at $137,000.
Why This Matters:
The data centre employment debate highlights a fundamental tension between short-term construction activity and long-term job creation. While advocates tout job numbers, the reality shows highly automated facilities requiring minimal ongoing staff — a pattern that should inform public policy decisions about land use, resource allocation and infrastructure priorities. The substantial water and electricity demands raise questions about trade-offs, particularly as these facilities compete with residential needs in a constrained labour market. Premium wages for specialized trades may draw workers away from housing construction at a time when Australia faces significant residential building challenges. Policymakers weighing data centre proposals should consider whether temporary construction employment justifies permanent claims on scarce water and electricity resources, especially when operational job creation proves modest compared to the infrastructure footprint.
