India Wins Asian Games Gold and Olympic Qualification

India beat defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final at the Asian Games on Friday, taking gold and securing direct qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics. The win ended a 44-year wait. India last claimed the Asian Games women’s hockey title in 1982, on home soil.

A narrow final, a decisive goal

The final took place at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium. India scored after captain Salima Tete, Sakshi Rana and Lalremsiami combined in attack. Tete entered the striking circle and passed to Rana, who slipped the ball across to Lalremsiami. With little room, she scored with a reverse-stick shot.

India protected its lead for the rest of the match. China, the defending champions, finished behind India in the final. The 1-0 victory also secured the direct Olympic qualification described in the report, giving the Asian Games gold a second consequence for the team.

The match didn’t start as scheduled. A road accident delayed the team’s journey to the stadium, and the players arrived at 6:45 p.m. JST. Officials postponed the final, which began at 8 p.m. Salima injured a finger during the match. The report didn’t say the injury prevented her from playing a role in the final.

A squad rebuilt before the final

The gold came after a difficult period within the squad. The report described a fractured group, with 14 players injured, some players considering retirement and a rift in the camp becoming public. Those circumstances came before the team’s improved results, rather than an uninterrupted run to the title.

Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne returned as coach at the turn of the year, with support staff he had chosen. The staff included athletic performance head Wayne Lombard and drag-flick specialist Taeke Taekema. According to the report, India’s results improved from the Olympic qualifiers in March.

Marijne summed up the result in his own words: “I can't believe it. We won just the Asian Games gold. Last time it was silver. I think we defended really well.” He spoke about the gold and the defensive effort that preserved India’s lead against China.

Gold and a place at the Olympics

The medal ceremony followed the final. The players stood on the podium with joined hands, while goalkeepers Savita Punia and substitute Bichu Devi Kharibam exchanged medals. The report records the exchange, but offers no further details about the ceremony.

India’s victory brought two outcomes from the final’s single goal: the Asian Games women’s hockey title and direct qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics. India beat China by one goal after Lalremsiami finished the passing move created by Tete and Rana, then held its advantage until the match ended.

The win returned India to the top of the Asian Games women’s hockey competition for the first time since 1982. The final ended 1-0. Qualification was direct. For a squad described as fractured before its results improved, Friday’s victory secured both the medal and an Olympic place.
