Tehran has encouraged its proxy militias in Iraq to target Saudi Arabia, according to the report. This strategy aims to present Riyadh with a multifront conflict. Iran-backed militias have threatened Saudi Arabia for years as part of Tehran's broader regional strategy.
Iran's Proxy Network Expands
The most persistent threat to Saudi Arabia has come from the Houthis in Yemen. Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen in 2015, marking the eleventh year of this conflict. The Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles and drones toward Saudi territory since then. These attacks have targeted airports, cities, and critical energy infrastructure.
Iran supplied the Houthis with increasingly sophisticated missile and drone technology. This greatly expanded their ability to strike deep inside the kingdom. In September 2019, Iran itself attacked Saudi Arabia's Aramco facilities at Abqaiq and Khurais, now in its seventh year since that incident. The Houthis claimed responsibility for those attacks, but the US and Saudi Arabia explicitly blamed Iran.
Iranian-backed militias based in Iraq have also emerged as a significant threat to Riyadh in recent years. Tehran has supplied some of these Iraqi militias with missiles and drone technology. In January 2021, a drone attack that targeted Riyadh was believed to have been carried out by one of these militias, now in its fifth year since that event.
Regional Security Under Siege
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need for the Iraqi government to take all necessary measures. These measures are crucial to prevent its territories from being used as grounds for launching acts of aggression. Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen have escalated in recent weeks. This escalation underscores the continuous pressure exerted by Iran's regional proxies.
