Reliance Pays Staff Early as Jio IPO Courts Employees

Nearly 420,000 Reliance Industries employees received their October paychecks about 15 days early, without being told why. According to people familiar with the matter, the timing coincides with Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s push to draw the conglomerate’s workforce into the $3.2 billion initial public offering of Jio Platforms, its telecom and digital services arm.

The sources asked not to be identified because the information is private. Reliance Industries didn’t immediately comment.

Who Is Being Asked to Invest

The outreach reached most employees across the company’s group businesses. Teams asked whether workers or their family members had accounts for electronic share trading. Anyone without an account was encouraged to open one. That effort could turn employees—and potentially their families—into shareholders in the offering.

The numbers are substantial. As of June 30, Reliance Industries had 419,911 employees, the second-biggest workforce among India’s listed companies, behind only Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Jio’s website says that 74,822 of them work for Jio.

How the Offering Is Structured

Jio is targeting a valuation of up to ₹10.3 lakh crore ($108 billion). It aims to raise as much as ₹30,200 crore by offering up to 270 million shares, priced at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 each.

Company filings reserve up to ₹500 crore worth of shares for eligible employees, who get a 5% discount. Jio employees can apply through the employee quota. Other Reliance workers can bid in the retail category. Those who also hold shares in the parent company can bid through a portion reserved for those investors. The offering also sets aside up to ₹2,500 crore worth of shares for eligible Reliance Industries shareholders.

The early payday carries an unspoken implication. Workers received their money ahead of schedule without an explanation, at the same time they were being encouraged to invest in a share sale run by their employer.

Institutional Demand

The IPO is scheduled to open for subscription on October 21 and close on October 23. The anchor book opens on October 19. Jio has received more than $20 billion in bids. People familiar with the matter said global investors, including Fidelity Management & Research, Allianz SE and Capital Group, have indicated interest.

Large institutions are already circling an offering that employees are also being nudged toward. The staff discount is just 5%, and the employee tranche of up to ₹500 crore is small compared with the ₹30,200 crore the company aims to raise.

Why This Matters: When a company with roughly 420,000 employees encourages its workforce to buy into a flagship share sale, questions arise about where voluntary investment ends and workplace expectation begins. Employees depend on their employer for income, so an invitation from the top can carry more weight than an ordinary retail marketing pitch. Sources say the company paid salaries about 15 days early without explanation, adding to the need for transparency about how it handles such outreach. Workers opening trading accounts for the first time, and families who follow, take on market risk tied to the same company that pays their wages. Regulators and shareholders have a legitimate interest in ensuring participation is genuinely free and that those closest to the company aren’t carrying a disproportionate share of the exposure. Reliance hasn’t yet commented.
