Lebanon Civil Servants Continue Strike Over Allowances

Public offices remain closed

Lebanon’s civil servants’ strike continued Wednesday, Sept. 30, and was set to carry on Thursday, Oct. 1. The League of Public Sector Employees said it would keep public offices closed every Friday as it presses for higher transport allowances.

The Serail in Saida shut its doors Wednesday, according to a correspondent in southern Lebanon. Employees went to work to handle the most urgent matters, but they didn’t receive members of the public.

Employees press demands

The League’s planned Friday closures form part of its demand for higher transport allowances. The strike continued Wednesday, and public offices were set to remain affected Thursday, too. It isn’t over yet.

Teachers protest for tenure

Contract teachers from the Lebanese University protested outside the Education Ministry again Wednesday. They called for tenured positions.

The strike and the teachers’ protest involved separate demands reported Wednesday: public sector employees sought higher transport allowances, while Lebanese University contract teachers called for tenured positions. They’re pursuing different demands.
