Operations Roaring Lion and Epic Fury, launched by Israel and the United States on February 28, aimed to create conditions for regime change in Iran. This joint effort targeted the core of the Islamic Republic's leadership, eliminating Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Israeli strike on a Tehran bunker. Iran's defense minister and several IRGC generals were also killed in what became the IAF’s largest-ever aerial operation. Iran retaliated with missile attacks across the Middle East, targeting Gulf states and US military bases in the region.
Since February 28, ballistic missile attacks on Israel have killed 39 IDF soldiers and 23 civilians. These attacks injured at least 7,693 others. CENTCOM confirmed that 18 US soldiers were also killed in the Iranian retaliatory strikes. A ceasefire was announced on April 7 and took effect the following day, but the underlying threat persists.
Iran's Axis of Terror
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian declared, "We will die but we will not bow our heads," stating Tehran no longer trusts talks with the US. This defiant stance underscores the regime's rejectionist ideology. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Iranian state media IRNA on Saturday night that "No one can accuse the Islamic Republic of failing to explore the diplomatic path," despite the regime's continued aggression. Iran fired anti-ship missiles toward the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrating its willingness to disrupt international maritime security.
The USS George Washington was pictured in the Arabian Sea on September 13, enforcing a US naval blockade against Iran. This aircraft carrier provides cover for commercial vessels transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz. Iran was also reported responsible for antisemitic terror attacks in Liège and Antwerp earlier this year. The Belgian Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA) currently lists the threat level in Belgium as "very serious," highlighting the global reach of Iran's terror network.
Western Resolve Against Iranian Threat
Former President Trump rejected an Iranian proposal on Saturday, stating he "rejected their deal." He demanded Iran "immediately open the Hormuz Strait ... because they have no money coming in." Trump also indicated he expects the war to continue after the midterm elections, signaling sustained pressure on the regime. A top US Treasury Department official, Burke, toured over 50 countries across the Middle East and Europe. Burke warned these nations to cease relationships with Iran, underscoring the Western effort to isolate the regime.
Israel, a frontline state against this Islamist expansionism, continues to bolster its defenses. The Israeli Navy is considering a purchase of Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft for submarine warfare missions. This acquisition would expand covert maritime operations and counter growing submarine threats in the region. The IDF also destroyed a terror tunnel in Gaza, a constant reminder of the embedded terror infrastructure used by adversaries.
Defending the Outpost
The Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of sabotaging Gaza peace efforts for his own political gain. Al Thani also addressed Israel's "Qatargate" scandal, calling it "absurd." He claimed it would have been "the worst investment Qatar have ever done," attempting to deflect from the core issues of regional security. A report alleged an Egyptian intelligence chief visited Israel days before Oct. 7 to issue a security warning; however, the PMO rejected these allegations. The PMO stated the report "was denied at the time and is being recycled to manipulate the Israeli public," emphasizing the ongoing attempts to undermine Israel's security narrative. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate Director Abbas Kamel on June 30, 2021, demonstrating ongoing high-level security engagements.
