The Maccabiah Games, postponed by one year due to the ongoing war and security situation following the October 7 attacks, will proceed with an opening ceremony at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem on July 1, 2026. This event is being held in partnership with Israel’s Ministry of Culture and Sport, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), Bank Leumi, EL AL, Reebok, The Jewish Agency, the Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and the World Zionist Organization. Organizers have stated that ticket sales have commenced for what is anticipated to be one of Israel’s largest cultural and sporting events of the year.
Capital's Cultural Front
The Maccabiah Games, often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics,” are expected to bring thousands of Jewish athletes to Israel to compete in more than 30 sports from July 1-13. The involvement of corporate entities such as Bank Leumi, EL AL, and Reebok highlights the integration of capital into state-sponsored cultural events, leveraging the spectacle for brand visibility and market expansion. The ceremony itself is designed as a major summer evening of music, sports, and live performances, featuring a 70-meter stage, giant LED screens, pyrotechnics, and hundreds of dancers.
The production will be hosted by Assi Azar and Anna Aronov, with appearances by Montana Tucker, Netta Barzilai, Anna Zak, Idan Raichel, Itay Levy, and Yuval Raphael. Montana Tucker, identified as a prominent pro-Israel voice on social media who has spoken extensively against antisemitism, will perform an original song and help lead the athletes’ parade. Her participation, alongside the overall theme of “Jewish unity,” serves to reinforce state narratives and consolidate ideological support through cultural production.
Idan Raichel will perform special arrangements of his songs alongside former Hamas hostages Daniella Gilboa and Edan Alexander. This inclusion further intertwines the event with the ongoing conflict, framing the spectacle within the context of state security and national identity. The postponement of this edition of the Maccabiah from its original 2025 schedule directly links the event's timing to the material conditions of war and its aftermath.
The State's Hand in Land and Spectacle
Beyond the competitions, organizers have announced the games will include a new experiential sports complex at Expo Tel Aviv. Furthermore, volunteer activities and sports programming are planned for the Tkuma region in cooperation with KKL-JNF. KKL-JNF, a quasi-state entity, has a long history of land acquisition and control, and its involvement in the Tkuma region points to the ongoing project of consolidating state power and resources in areas affected by conflict.
The ceremony will open with a new musical arrangement performed by Yuval Raphael, followed by a one-time duet from Netta Barzilai and Anna Zak. Later, Itay Levy will perform with a choir and hundreds of dancers as part of a large-scale stage production. These performances represent the concentrated labor of artists and technicians, whose efforts are marshaled to create a cultural event that serves the broader interests of the state and its corporate partners.
Ticket prices for the opening ceremony will begin at NIS 99, which organizers claim is “in an effort to make the event accessible to families and younger fans.” This pricing strategy, while presented as a concession to accessibility, still constitutes a barrier for many and ensures revenue generation, demonstrating how even gestures of inclusion operate within the framework of capital accumulation. Organizers anticipate significant demand for the event at Teddy Stadium, further underscoring its economic and ideological value to the sponsoring entities.
