Mexico Approves First RNA Fungicide, Shifts Crop Protection

Mexico's regulatory agency granted the world's first approval for an RNA-based biofungicide on August 12, 2026, marking a significant shift in how governments approach agricultural pest control and environmental protection. The decision by Cofepris, Mexico's health authority, came alongside an announcement that GreenLight Biosciences will invest close to US$100 million in a Mexico City manufacturing plant to produce the product.

The approval targets powdery mildew in grapes, a fungal disease caused by Erysiphe necator. Unlike conventional chemical fungicides that blanket crops with broad-spectrum toxins, the RNA biofungicide works by silencing a specific gene the fungus needs to survive. Mexican regulators emphasized that the RNA acts only on the target fungus and degrades naturally in soil, water, and fruit—a mechanism fundamentally different from chemical alternatives that can persist in the environment and harm non-target organisms.

Why Conventional Approaches Fall Short

Conventional chemical fungicides are broad-spectrum tools that kill beneficial fungi alongside harmful ones, disrupting soil ecosystems and leaving residues that regulators and consumers increasingly reject. These products have driven decades of environmental degradation in agricultural regions, contaminating water supplies and reducing biodiversity in farming landscapes. The RNA biofungicide offers growers a way to maintain high yields while addressing what's become an urgent public health and environmental concern: the ecological cost of industrial agriculture.

GreenLight Biosciences founder and CEO Andrey Zarur announced the manufacturing investment alongside the approval. The company's separate RNA acaricide targeting spider mites in crops such as avocado and strawberry remains under Cofepris evaluation. The approval was coordinated with Senasica and Semarnat, Mexico's agricultural and environmental agencies, signaling institutional alignment around biotechnology innovation.

A Precedent With Regional Implications

Mexico's decision carries weight across Latin America. Argentina, Brazil, and Chile all maintain large, export-driven farm sectors and will likely face pressure to fast-track similar approvals if the technology proves itself in Mexican fields. The approval signals that regulators willing to invest in rigorous scientific review can move faster than waiting for approvals elsewhere—a precedent that could reshape how the region approaches agricultural innovation.

Local production in Mexico City addresses a structural gap in agricultural supply chains. Manufacturing closer to end-users reduces transportation emissions, supports local employment, and creates a shorter distance between production and application for growers across North and Central America. This matters for economic resilience: it keeps capital and jobs in the region rather than importing finished products from distant manufacturers.

The U.S. EPA registered the first sprayable RNA pesticide in 2023, but Mexico's approval represents the first global authorization for an RNA biofungicide specifically. The move reflects confidence among Mexican regulators that the science holds up and that RNA-based crop protection can be deployed safely at scale.
