Residents Evacuate as Hurricane Polo Nears Mexico Coast

Residents left their homes near Puerto San Carlos as Hurricane Polo approached Mexico’s Baja California Sur state on Monday, September 28, 2026. Their evacuation led an Associated Press photo gallery of scenes from Latin America and the Caribbean. AP photojournalist Ramón Espinosa curated the gallery in Havana, and the agency updated it at 8:19 p.m. UTC on October 1, 2026.

Evacuations and the coast

The gallery included images from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay and Panama, along with photographs tied to Polo’s approach to Mexico. It identified residents leaving their homes near Puerto San Carlos. The gallery didn’t give an evacuation total or further details about the storm’s effects.

Off El Doradillo Beach near Puerto Madryn, seabirds perched on the carcass of a southern right whale in a photograph from Argentina on Wednesday, September 30. The gallery identified the animal and location, but it didn’t explain more about the whale or the circumstances behind the carcass.

After rains near Copiapo on Thursday, September 24, flowers covered the Atacama Desert. The image captured the blooms following rain in the desert. The gallery offered no further details about the rainfall or its effects.

Campaigns and public gatherings

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was running for reelection, greeted supporters at a campaign rally in Sao Paulo on Saturday, September 26. Another image showed opposition presidential candidate Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro campaigning in Sao Paulo on Monday, September 28. The gallery presented both campaign scenes, but it didn’t provide details about campaign platforms, turnout or election polling.

At a Pride parade in Montevideo, Uruguay, a reveler appeared on Friday, September 25. In Ecuador, competitors raced guinea pigs during celebrations marking the 107th anniversary of the canton of Salcedo on Saturday, September 26. The photographs recorded the parade and canton celebration as public events in the gallery.

Institutions, art and everyday scenes

Residents gathered in a communal area at the Pequeño Cottolengo Don Orione, a home for people with disabilities in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Thursday, September 24. Pope Leo XIV was scheduled to visit the home in November. The gallery account identified the residents and institution, and noted the planned visit.

Visitors attended the international art fair ARTBO in Bogota, Colombia, on Thursday, September 24. In a separate photograph, a man sat on the black sand of Chame beach in Panama on Sunday, September 27. The account described the place and scene, but supplied no additional details about the visitors, the man or the beach.

The photographs documented evacuations, political campaigning, public celebrations, a home for people with disabilities, an art fair and coastal scenes. AP’s gallery brought them together under its coverage of Hurricane Polo and other notable photographs from Latin America and the Caribbean.
