Austerity Architect Resigns Amid Illicit Enrichment Scandal

Manuel Adorni, Argentine President Javier Milei’s Cabinet chief and a central figure in his administration's "harsh austerity program," resigned Saturday following a corruption scandal that exposed the systemic nature of wealth accumulation by those in power. Adorni, who served as Milei’s former spokesperson, had emerged in 2023 as the public face of the government’s anti-corruption drive, regularly criticizing the "excesses" of the opposition. His resignation comes as federal prosecutors investigate him for illicit enrichment, directly contradicting the administration's stated commitment to stamping out graft.

Adorni, described as one of the president’s most trusted aides, was granted significant influence over negotiations with governors and other stakeholders in Congress after Milei named him Cabinet chief last year. His public role involved championing policies that imposed economic hardship on the working class, while his private conduct now reveals a pattern of personal enrichment through surplus extraction.

Austerity for the Masses, Riches for the Elite

Scrutiny of Adorni’s private life began in March when his wife, who does not work in government, accompanied him on the presidential aircraft for a conference in New York. Days later, footage surfaced showing Adorni and his family flying on a private jet to Uruguay’s elite Punta del Este beach resort. These instances highlighted a lifestyle inconsistent with the austerity measures promoted by the government and the modest public salary of its officials, revealing the hypocrisy of the ruling class.

Local media further reported that Adorni acquired two properties since Milei took office: a Buenos Aires apartment and a weekend house outside the city. Images also emerged of him on other luxury vacations, including an all-cash trip to Aruba. These acquisitions and expenditures stand in stark contrast to his publicly disclosed monthly salary of around $2,600 until late last year, demonstrating a clear pattern of illicit enrichment.

When confronted by lawmakers and journalists, Adorni struggled to provide a coherent explanation for the significant disparity between his lavish spending and his official income. For weeks, he maintained his innocence, denying any criminal activity. However, as pressure intensified earlier this month, Adorni admitted to buying dollars in Argentina’s black market and concealing $500,000 in savings from tax authorities. He described this as a "technically illegal, albeit hugely widespread, offense" in crisis-prone Argentina, which largely goes unprosecuted. Adorni insisted the hidden funds were earned legitimately, including through cryptocurrency investments, a claim that remains unsubstantiated by public records.

The State's Role in Protecting Capital

President Milei, currently on a visit to Spain, publicly defended Adorni, stating, “Manuel is innocent,” and affirming, “I stand by my ministers to the bitter end.” This defense from the head of state underscores how the state apparatus can be mobilized to protect figures within the ruling class, even when faced with allegations of illicit enrichment. Milei’s sister and top adviser, Karina Milei, also thanked Adorni for his “tireless work” and described him as an “upright, valuable and much-loved” member of their libertarian party, further demonstrating internal solidarity within the administration.

Adorni’s resignation letter, posted to social media, stated, “For the first time since December 10, 2023, I am going against your wishes,” and expressed gratitude for Milei’s trust and support through what he called an "unjust, painful and exhausting process." The departure of such a key figure, without a named replacement for the Cabinet chief position, leaves a void in the administration’s structure as the scandal continues to unfold, exposing the contradictions inherent in a government that preaches austerity while its architects engage in private surplus extraction.
