Tennessee Jails Missing Girl’s Father on Assault Charge

Donald Wells, the father of missing Summer Wells, was booked into Hawkins County Jail at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday on a domestic assault charge, according to court records. He was scheduled for arraignment at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Jail records show the state taking custody, but further details about the charge weren’t immediately available.

The State’s Custody, the Family’s Unanswered Questions

Wells is 61. He has previously faced arrest on domestic assault, DUI and firearms charges unrelated to his daughter’s disappearance, which remains unsolved. In 2020, officials served him with a civil order of protection on behalf of his wife. Those records sketch a family already facing state scrutiny, while the question of what happened to Summer remains unanswered.

Neither a spokesperson for the Wells family nor the sheriff’s office immediately responded to requests for comment. Officials didn’t immediately release further details about the new charge. The official record supplies a booking time and a scheduled court appearance, but not what led to the arrest.

Summer was 5 when she vanished from her family’s home in rural Rogersville. Her mother, Candus Bly, told police she last saw Summer at the home on Ben Hill Road on June 15, 2021, after the girl came inside from planting flowers with her grandmother. Summer would now be 10.

The parents have maintained that someone entered their 11-acre property, lured Summer outside and took her. No suspects have been publicly identified. Investigators had sought a potential witness who drove a red pickup truck with full-sized ladder racks and white buckets in the bed.

A Missing Child, Official Channels

Summer was about 3 feet tall and around 40 pounds when last seen. She wore gray pants and a pink shirt, may have been barefoot, and had blonde hair. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released an age-progressed image showing what she might have looked like as a 9-year-old.

The couple’s other children were taken from their home after Summer vanished. The family’s website says the parents were cleared by a Department of Child Services investigation but haven’t regained custody of their sons. That account places the investigation’s stated outcome beside the family’s continuing separation from the children; it doesn’t give further details about the decision or its basis.

The parents both have criminal records, according to the article. Bly’s sister, Rose Marie Bly, was reported missing from Wisconsin in 2009, and her case remains unsolved. The family’s story therefore includes multiple unresolved disappearances and decisions made through official custody and investigative systems, while the available account leaves many questions unanswered.

Anyone with information about Summer’s whereabouts was asked to contact the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office at 423-272-7121 or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND. Tips can also be emailed to [email protected]. The account describes those official reporting channels; it mentions no community-led search, mutual-aid effort or other grassroots response.
