Film at Lincoln Center announced the main slate of films for its 64th edition. This year's New York Film Festival will feature 32 selected films. The festival runs from September 25 to October 12. Dennis Lim, the festival’s artistic director, issued a significant statement. He remarked that it's "hard to recall a prior main slate program in which the state of the world has been as urgently reflected in so many creative ways." Lim further explained that audiences could "take any cross section of this lineup and come away with a vivid picture of what our present looks, sounds, and feels like." He expressed deep encouragement for the opportunity. He aims to introduce New York audiences to "works by so many fearless, imaginative directors whose artistry has been inspired by the shared realities of our world."
James Gray’s Paper Tiger will kick off the festival. This Queens-set crime drama stars Adam Driver and Miles Teller. Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! is slated as the centerpiece gala. Pedro Pascal stars as a cellist in this production. It will mark its world premiere in New York. Ava DuVernay’s 14th, a documentary, will close the festival. This film delves into the 14th Amendment. It functions as a kind of sequel to her earlier 13th documentary. Its world premiere also takes place at the festival.
Diverse International Selections
The lineup includes a broad array of international cinema. Pedro Almodovar’s Bitter Christmas is a notable entry. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden also features prominently. Andrew Haigh’s A Long Winter adds to the global selections. Radu Jude’s The Diary of a Chambermaid is another film from the diverse slate. Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love and Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care are both included. Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland and Ira Sachs’ The Man I Love complete a strong European contingent. These films represent varied artistic visions.
New Premieres and American Voices
Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero will make its world premiere at the NYFF on September 26. This film is a sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One. Chris Rock’s Misty Green will play at the festival. It will first premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. William and David Greaves’ documentary Once Upon a Time in Harlem adds an important American voice to the program. Julia Loktev’s My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile continues her documentary series. This particular installment focuses on modern-day dissent in Russia. The festival promises a comprehensive look at contemporary filmmaking.
