Transnational AI Erases Team Loyalty in NFL Draft Prediction

A transnational artificial intelligence system, Grok AI, has generated a mock draft for the entire first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, introducing a "new strategy" that fundamentally erodes the traditional concept of team loyalty by proposing "part-time players" for multiple teams. The predictions, published by USA TODAY Sports, detail how players like Sonny Styles, Makai Lemon, Olaivavega Ioane, Monroe Freeling, and Akheem Mesidor are assigned to serve multiple franchises across the league, challenging the established structures of professional sports.

The Algorithm's Assault on Tradition

The Grok AI mock draft explicitly outlines a scenario where individual players are not bound to a single team. For instance, linebacker Sonny Styles, an Ohio State product, is predicted to be drafted by the New York Giants at No. 5, the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 10, and the Dallas Cowboys at No. 12. The article notes that the Bengals would be entering a "pilot program that allows players to play for two teams" by selecting Styles.

Similarly, wide receiver Makai Lemon from USC is projected to join the Miami Dolphins at No. 11, the Los Angeles Rams at No. 13, and the Carolina Panthers at No. 19, with the report stating he is "set to join his third team in the first round." Offensive guard Olaivavega Ioane of Penn State is predicted to be taken by the Baltimore Ravens at No. 14, the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 21, and the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 22. Offensive tackle Monroe Freeling from Georgia is listed for the Cleveland Browns at No. 6 and the Detroit Lions at No. 17, with the AI predicting he will be "racking up the miles between Detroit and Cleveland to help anchor a pair of offensive lines." Edge rusher Akheem Mesidor of Miami (Fla.) is projected to be drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 15 and the Dallas Cowboys at No. 20.

USA TODAY Sports itself commented on the experiment, stating that artificial intelligence is "a lot of things" but "intelligent is not one of them, at least when it comes to NFL mock drafts." The publication described the AI's output as having "some good, some bad and some ugly" and warned that if a favorite team's general manager asks artificial intelligence who to pick, "we hope you picked up a pair of cleats at the store. It might just make you the next pick in the draft."

Elite Tech's Flawed Vision

The AI's predictions also contained factual inconsistencies and omissions. David Bailey, widely expected to be a No. 2 pick, was a noticeable absence from Grok's first 32 selections. Furthermore, the AI incorrectly identified Steve Wilks as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, despite Raheem Morris holding the position and Wilks having been fired by the Jets during the 2025 season. The article noted that the mock draft may raise eyebrows.

With just over two weeks remaining until the 2026 NFL Draft, scheduled for later this month, the Grok AI predictions offer a glimpse into a future where transnational technology attempts to redefine the fundamental loyalties and structures of national sports. The Las Vegas Raiders were predicted to take QB Fernando Mendoza at No. 1, a selection Grok called "one of the more predictable No. 1 selections in recent years." The New York Jets were predicted to take Edge/LB Arvell Reese at No. 2. The Arizona Cardinals were predicted to take OT Francis Mauigoa at No. 3. The Tennessee Titans were predicted to take RB Jeremiyah Love at No. 4. The Washington Commanders were predicted to take S Caleb Downs at No. 7. The New Orleans Saints were predicted to take WR Carnell Tate at No. 8. The Kansas City Chiefs were predicted to take Edge Reuben Bain Jr. at No. 9. The New York Jets, via Indianapolis, were predicted to take WR Jordyn Tyson at No. 16. The Minnesota Vikings were predicted to take S Dillon Thieneman at No. 18. The Philadelphia Eagles were predicted to take TE Kenyon Sadiq at No. 23. The Cleveland Browns, via Jacksonville, were predicted to take WR Denzel Boston at No. 24. The Chicago Bears were predicted to take S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 25. The Buffalo Bills were predicted to take Edge Cassius Howell at No. 26. The San Francisco 49ers were predicted to take Edge T.J. Parker at No. 27. The Houston Texans were predicted to take DT Kayden McDonald at No. 28. The Kansas City Chiefs, via Rams, were predicted to take CB Jermod McCoy at No. 29. The Miami Dolphins, via Denver, were predicted to take CB Avieon Terrell at No. 30. The New England Patriots were predicted to take OT Blake Miller at No. 31. The Seattle Seahawks were predicted to take CB Brandon Cisse at No. 32.
