Police and Federal Response Follows Deadly Shootings

Four people were killed and 15 injured in three shootings in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood early Sunday, as federal authorities in Texas prepared to discuss their response Monday. Across the country, Halloween weekend gun incidents left at least eight people dead and dozens more injured. The people hurt in these incidents are at the center of the cost; the response described so far is led by police, federal authorities and elected officials.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn said after a nightclub shooting there: “No one should have to fear for their life while enjoying an evening out.” Two people were killed and six injured at a Halloween costume party in Jackson, Mississippi, early Sunday. Police said two men entered the club wearing ski masks just before at least one suspect opened fire into the crowd. The suspects hadn’t been identified. A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were killed; the six injured people were taken to hospitals with injuries that didn’t appear life-threatening.

The police response, and its limits

In Dallas, the three shootings took place in a music and restaurant district. Investigators were still trying to determine whether the incidents were related and what prompted them. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said his department had increased police presence in the district before the shootings. That deployment didn’t prevent the killings and injuries reported Sunday.

Deep Ellum had also seen deadly violence earlier this year. Two people were fatally stabbed during a fight outside a nightclub in February. A security guard was shot and killed while trying to break up a fight inside a nightclub in May, police said. Five people were wounded in a nonfatal shooting outside a sports bar during Cinco de Mayo festivities in May.

Federal authorities planned a news conference to discuss actions related to the Dallas shootings. Across the country, authorities and investigators continued searching for suspects and motives as elected officials condemned the violence. The account reports no proposed legislation or electoral solution. It also describes no neighborhood-led direct action, mutual aid or horizontal organizing; the response it details comes from institutions with police power.

More shootings, more official statements

Near Indiana University’s campus, seven people were wounded early Sunday in a shooting in a busy nightlife area. Police said none of the victims were believed to be students. Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson said in a video address shared on social media Sunday: “This is unacceptable in Bloomington, and in any community.” Thomson also said that even with increased police staffing, no public safety plan could eliminate every act of violence.

In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight wounded in two separate shootings just outside Legion Field on Saturday night, after the annual “Magic City Classic” football game. Nearly 70,000 fans attended; Alabama A&M won 31-28 against archrival Alabama State. Michael Pickett, chief of the Birmingham Police Department, said most spectators and families had left the stadium property after the game. The first shooting happened nearby, where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.

Other shootings occurred in entertainment districts and college towns, including Fayetteville, Arkansas; Birmingham, Alabama; Newark, Delaware; Bloomington, Illinois; and Bloomington, Indiana. The report also describes shootings in college-town nightlife districts where annual Halloween gatherings are popular.

Academic studies of police department and hospital data from major cities over the last decade found gun violence more frequent at night, on weekends and on holidays. Several studies identified July Fourth as one of the most violent, or the most violent, holiday for gun violence incidents, citing dark hours for fireworks celebrations, alcohol consumption and other factors. New Year’s and Halloween also ranked high.

FBI figures for 2025 showed homicides decreased by 18% and overall violent crime dropped 9.3%; the U.S. homicide rate was at its lowest point in 75 years. Federal authorities and nonprofit groups said national violent crime and homicide rates had been declining since 2022, and experts said the trend continued through the first six months of 2026. The report names no nonprofit group, funding source or specific service delivered. The official figures describe a broader decline, while the weekend’s victims and the search for suspects remain the immediate story.
