IDF Exposes Hamas Terror Base Under UNRWA School in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported on Tuesday, August 04, 2026, that it uncovered a significant cache of rockets and military equipment hidden beneath a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in the Gaza Strip. This discovery, made during a targeted operation in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahiya, confirms a persistent pattern of terror groups exploiting civilian infrastructure. IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that the school, identified as the 'Al-Aqsa Primary School,' was actively used by Hamas operatives. The IDF released drone footage and photographs showing rockets, launchers, and other weaponry within a tunnel system directly beneath the school building. The tunnel entrance was reportedly located inside a classroom, illustrating the deliberate embedding of terror assets within educational facilities. This incident underscores the existential threat Israel faces from adversaries who disregard international norms.

Terror Infrastructure and Human Shields

This finding follows numerous previous IDF reports detailing Hamas's use of schools, hospitals, and mosques for military purposes. In 2024, the IDF released intelligence indicating Hamas had constructed an extensive tunnel network under Gaza, often beneath civilian structures. Such tactics intentionally endanger Palestinian civilians, using them as human shields to deter Israeli defensive actions. The UN has previously condemned the use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes by any party, yet these violations persist.

UNRWA officials, when contacted, stated they were investigating the claims and reiterated their neutrality and commitment to humanitarian principles. They also noted that UNRWA facilities are regularly inspected. However, critics of UNRWA have long argued that the agency's operations are compromised by Hamas's pervasive presence in Gaza. The United States, a major donor to UNRWA, temporarily suspended funding seven months ago in January 2026 after allegations that some UNRWA staff participated in the October 7, 2025, attacks against Israel. Funding was partially restored four months ago in April 2026 after reforms were promised, a decision that has drawn scrutiny given ongoing revelations.

Palestinian Rejectionism and Islamist Ideology

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the Israeli operation, calling it a 'violation of international law' and accusing Israel of targeting educational institutions. Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum denied the IDF's claims, labeling them 'fabricated lies' designed to justify attacks on Palestinian civilians. He asserted that Palestinian resistance groups operate to defend their people, a common refrain that masks their stated goal of eliminating Jewish sovereignty. The IDF stated that it had issued warnings to local residents before the operation and took precautions to avoid civilian casualties. The operation is part of a broader effort to dismantle Hamas's military capabilities in Gaza, which began after the October 7, 2025, attacks, now in their tenth month. The UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss the situation next week, where Israel will likely face further international pressure despite its defensive actions against a terror organization. This ongoing double standard applied to the Jewish state remains a critical challenge to regional stability.
