Tabloid Digs Through a Refugee's Marriage Papers Again

A motion filed Wednesday by the US District Attorney for the District of Columbia asks a court to keep a federal search warrant for Rep. Ilhan Omar's home sealed. That's the state moving in secret against a sitting congresswoman who arrived in this country as a refugee from Somalia in 1995, and the public gets to read about it through the New York Post, which has been picking over her marriage records for years.

Who Has the Power

The motion refers to Omar as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar." Notice what's happening. The prosecutor's office wants the warrant locked away. The tabloid supplies the narrative. Nobody in that arrangement has to prove anything in public before the story is already everywhere.

Omar, 45, has denied fraudulently marrying Ahmed Elmi, 41, whom she described as a British citizen. They legally married in the US in 2009 and divorced in 2017. Asked whether they were related, she cautiously replied "not to my knowledge." The Post says evidence has emerged that "continues to fuel speculation" otherwise. Speculation is the operative word. The paper's own account admits that Omar's family background is "complicated by Somali paperwork being lost or destroyed."

That's the trap built into the immigration apparatus. A family flees a military dictatorship, records vanish in the chaos, and decades later the missing paper becomes the evidence of a crime. The article says Omar's late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a prominent military commander in the regime "which millions fled." Leila Nur Said's 1997 UK marriage certificate lists her father as Nur Said Elmi. Multiple unnamed sources told The Post they believe that's Omar's father. Leila and Omar did not respond to emailed requests for comment.

What They're Calling "Evidence"

Look at what the paper offers. A shared address on a marriage application in Columbia Heights. Joint tax filings with Omar's other partner, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, in 2014 and 2015, which the Post concedes "were later corrected." A green-card application Elmi withdrew after US Citizenship and Immigration Services requested more evidence about the marriage. Omar says she and Elmi split in 2011 but the paperwork dragged on for years. She married Hirsi in January 2018. They have three children.

Then comes the bulk of the piece, and it's gossip. A Minneapolis-based Somali blogger told the Daily Mail in 2020 that Omar had introduced Elmi as her brother. The same blogger described Elmi's clothes, his lipstick, his shorts, and claimed he was sent to America as a kind of "rehab" for a "decadent and immoral life." The Post catalogs Elmi's Instagram captions, his "dirty dandy" bio, his drinks at London cafes, his academic interests in "critically queer" and "decolonization" research. It notes that apart from Omar, he's never been romantically linked to a woman.

Strip away the innuendo and ask what any of that proves about immigration fraud. Nothing. It proves a newspaper is willing to run a man's wardrobe and sexuality as evidence. The immigration bureaucracy and the tabloid press do the same job here: sorting people into the legitimate and the suspect, and treating anyone with a complicated family as guilty until their paperwork clears.

The Reform Trap

Omar is a Democratic member of Congress, an elected official inside the very institution now seeking to seal a warrant against her. Winning a seat didn't shield her from the machinery. The ballot gave her a title; it didn't change who controls the prosecutors, the agencies, or the front pages.

Elmi's green-card application is withdrawn. His life is picked apart from London to Johannesburg. Omar's late father, who died at 67 of COVID complications in June 2020, has his Facebook condolences quoted as proof of identity. Even the dead get entered into the file.

All of it rests on the state's power to define who belongs, who is related to whom, and which marriages count. Families that don't fit the form get treated as fraud. Meanwhile the warrant stays sealed, and the public is left with a tabloid's version of a story it isn't allowed to check.
