A Walmart employee was shot in the leg Friday evening when a dispute between two customers at a Pennsylvania store escalated into gunfire, leaving the worker — who wasn't involved in the argument — injured and highlighting the risks retail workers face during routine shifts.
Officers responded to the Walmart at 50 McDade Blvd. in Darby Township, Delaware County, shortly after 7 p.m. after reports of gunfire inside the store. The suspect fled before police arrived and remains at large.

Darby Township Police Chief Michael Sousa said investigators believe two men got into a verbal altercation in the self-checkout area before one of them pulled out a handgun and fired. "It looked like, from what we're gathering with my detectives, two males get into a verbal altercation at self-checkout," Sousa said. "One of the males brandishes a firearm, fires a round indiscriminately and hits one of the female Walmart employees in the leg — not the subject he was arguing with."
The employee was transported to a hospital. Sousa didn't immediately provide an update on her condition. The shooter didn't strike the person he was arguing with — instead, his reckless gunfire wounded someone simply doing her job.
Search for the Gunman
Police are reviewing surveillance video in an effort to identify the shooter. The suspect remains at large, though Sousa said officers have cleared the Walmart and nearby businesses. "There is no threat to the public," he added.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities haven't released a description of the suspect or indicated whether they've identified potential witnesses among shoppers who were inside the store during the shooting.
