President Donald Trump declared on July 16, 2026, that China had actively worked to prevent his election and reelection, alleging Beijing hacked the 2020 election to benefit his rival, Joe Biden. Speaking from the East Room of the White House, Trump asserted that a "colossal security breach" had been covered up by elements within the U.S. government, which he termed the "deep state."
Trump stated that the cover-up itself was more disturbing given additional information showing China's engagement in other election-related activities. These actions, he claimed, aimed to undermine his first administration and his 2020 campaign. "They did not want, they just didn't want it, (and) they fought like hell not to have it, Donald Trump to win, and for good reason," Trump told the nation.
Elite Betrayal and Foreign Interference
The President directly accused the "deep state" of deliberately concealing critical intelligence. He said those responsible for alerting the nation instead kept the information secret and hidden. They didn't disclose it to him as president, nor to anyone else, and to the best of his knowledge, they didn't inform Congress. Instead, Trump noted, they repeatedly claimed, "This is the most secure election in the history of our country."
Americans have been "blatantly lied to" for years regarding the security of election infrastructure, Trump insisted. This includes voting machines and ballot counting systems. He cited a new intelligence assessment which judges that "Untitled States adversaries, including at a minimum Russia. China, Iran, North Korea, as well as non-state groups, have the capability to compromise U.S. election infrastructure."
This address comes less than four months before midterm congressional elections. Republicans face the prospect of losing control of at least one chamber of Congress, a situation influenced by Trump's poll ratings and the historical challenges faced by the party holding the White House during midterms.
Reclaiming National Sovereignty
Since his 2024 reelection, Trump has worked to gain unprecedented federal control over elections. This effort includes firing key leaders of the federal Election Assistance Commission, a bipartisan panel tasked with helping local election officials administer elections. He has also been urging lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act, a legislative push to centralize election oversight.
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended the primetime address. Following the speech, attendees stood and applauded, a clear show of support for the President's claims of systemic subversion. Trump pointed to attendees and later shook hands with journalist John Solomon, signaling a direct appeal to those outside the established information channels.
